BREAK OUT by Nina Croft (Book Review)

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Review

If you love shows like Firefly and Star Trek, then you’ll love this story. It has the feel of that show with the added bonus of having a sexy vampire as part of the rogue team.

In fact, the whole team is unique with their own skill set.

Speaking of the team, I enjoyed how they worked together. They might not claim to be a family but the “family feel” came through anyways.

As for the flow of the story, I did find myself growing bored with some sections. If it wasn’t for the interactions between Rico and Skylar, I’m not sure if I would’ve kept reading the science fiction/romance novel.

Since I never knew what trick he would pull next, I kept tuning back into the show.

Great job, Nina, for creating a character that keeps the reader coming back for more.

Ripped by Katy Evans (Book Review)

A ripped rock star with attitude. An ex-girlfriend with a reckless plan.

Pandora assumed getting her heart broken by her bad boy ex could only happen once–until Mackenna Jones comes back to town for the biggest concert of his career. They say girls are getting pregnant just thinking about the Crack Bikini tour and it’s destined to be a huge hit.

Oh, it’ll be a hit alright–when Pandora comes out swinging. She and her friend Melanie are determined to humiliate him onstage. But when they’re caught by security and her ex is summoned, Mackenna decides not to press charges if she’ll join him on tour and follow certain conditions–rules designed to give him the upper hand and keep her in close contact with him once again. Soon, the passion they once shared is reignited, and no matter how much Pandora wants to hate him, her hard exterior starts to crack.

And worse: Mackenna knows it, too. But even Mackenna doesn’t know everything…

Review

Like Pandora and Kenna, we all have done things in our lives we regret. We’ve hurt someone and wish we could undo the past or at least have the opportunity to make amends. Luckily for these two, they did get their second chance – even though it was six years in the making.

For me, I found myself relating to Pandora’s personality. I’m a little spunky, closed off at times due to my upbringing, but when I let my walls down……watch out.

See, I think that’s what makes this a great, memorable story. I saw myself as Pandora, minus the goth look and pink stripe. *smiles*

In a nutshell, her characters come across as “real”.

It’s what drew me to Katy’s stories and has me returning with each new release. I think after you read one of her stories, she will become a staple on your bookshelf too.

The 2B Trilogy by Ann Aguirre (Multi-Book Review)

(August 26, 2014)
Nadia Conrad has big dreams, and she’s determined to make them come true—for her parents’ sake as well as her own. But between maintaining her college scholarship and working at the local daycare to support herself, she barely has time to think, let alone date. Then she moves into a new apartment and meets the taciturn yet irresistible guy in 1B…
Daniel Tyler has grown up too fast. Becoming a single dad at twenty turned his life upside down—and brought him heartache he can’t risk again. Now, as he raises his four-year-old son while balancing a full-time construction management job and night classes, a social life is out of the question.  The last thing he wants is for four noisy students to move into the apartment upstairs. But one night, Nadia and Ty’s paths cross, and soon they can’t stay away from each other.

The timing is all wrong—but love happens when it happens. And you can’t know what you truly need until you stand to lose it.

Most people dream about getting out of Sharon, Nebraska, but after three years away, Lauren Barrett is coming home. There are the justifications she gives to everyone else—missing her family, losing her college scholarship. And then there’s the reason Lauren can’t admit to anyone: Rob Conrad, her best friend’s older brother.
Football prowess and jaw-dropping good looks made Rob a star in high school. Out in the real world, his job and his relationships are going nowhere. He can’t pinpoint exactly what’s missing until Lauren comes back to town, bringing old feelings and new dreams with her. But he’s the guy that women love and leave—not the one who makes them think of forever.

Though she’s terrified of opening up, Lauren’s ready to take that chance. Because the only thing more important than figuring out where you truly belong is finding the person you were meant to be with.

Some people wait decades to meet their soul mate. Courtney Kaufman suspects she met hers in high school—only to lose him at seventeen. Since then, Courtney’s social life has been a series of meaningless encounters, though she’s made a few close friends along the way. Especially her roommate, Max Cooper, who oozes damaged bad-boy vibes from every pore.
Max knows about feeling lost and trying to move beyond the pain—he’s been on his own since he was sixteen. Now it’s time to find out if he can ever go home again, and Courtney’s the only one he trusts to go with him. But the trip to Providence could change everything…because the more time he spends with Courtney, the harder it is to reconcile what he wants and what he thinks he deserves.

It started out so simple. One misfit helping another. Now Max will do anything to show Courtney that for every heart that’s ever been broken, there’s another that can make it complete.

It was quite interesting to read three stories which showcased the men as the emotionally fragile ones. For most of the books on my shelf, the women are usually the sensitive ones, uncertain about their worth, or unsure whether to follow their hearts.

Honestly, it was nice to read/see the inner turmoil men must face just like us women. Who says you need a Alpha dog to make a story engaging; a hit.

Now don’t get me wrong, I still love my strong silent bad boys. However…… these three tales prove that good guys DON’T always finish last.

Hope to Die by James Patterson (Book Review)

Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career. Cross’s family—his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children—have been ripped away. Terrified and desperate, Cross must give this mad man what he wants if he has any chance of saving the most important people in his life. The stakes have never been higher: What will Cross sacrifice to save the ones he loves?

For the past few installments in the Alex Cross series, I felt as if JP was just phoning it in. They were just blah. However with this one, JP totally knocked my socks off. There was so much intrigue, suspense, and Sunday was a psycho I won’t soon forget. The way he held the Cross’ family hostage and kept them immobilized was pure freaking genius.

Man, JP really put a lot of thought in it and, as a fan, I appreciate his creativity. This book reminded me why I fell in love with Alex Cross and why I stuck with JP when his storylines were faltering.

And on a final note, don’t mess with Nana. 🙂 Read the book and find out why.

Truth or Dare by Lori Foster (Book Review)

Three best friends find this is one game you might never outgrow . . .

Satisfy Me – Asia Michaels and her friends find themselves tantalized by a quiet new arrival in their small town–and by its possibilities. One thing leads to another as truth leads to dare, and Asia’s in the arms of a man who gives her answers to all of the questions she could never ask . . .

Indulge Me – Shy Becky Harte has a private wild side. But she never thought she’d run into a secret crush like George while buying some rather surprising items. George is more than intrigued at her purchases and would love to show the blushing Becky a thing or two. But it’s George who becomes the student when Becky starts calling the shots . . .

Drive Me Wild – Assertive Erica Lee is used to having the upper hand in business, her love life–everything. On a dare, she boldly approaches hunky, mischievous Ian Conrad with a scandalous proposal. Ian isn’t intimidated in the least by Erica–and he’s been hoping for just this opportunity. Seems like Erica might have finally met a man who can keep up with her . . .

I rather enjoyed how the three women challenged each other to a DARE for sexual satisfaction but only had the tables turn on them – quite deliciously, in fact.

And to think men say women are the ones who like to play games. Well, this collection proved that isn’t the case. *grins*

My only complaint was the love factor in the relationships seemed rather rushed. However due to them being short stories, I guess it was to be expected.

With that said, each story was sexier than the last and I was hooked from the get go to the bitter end.
