Dear Darwin by Jime Wimmer (Book Review)

Dear Darwin does love a good cup of tea while writing in his journals. One night, a late knock at his door catches Darwin by surprise. Soon he will begin his adventure across his beautiful island home, Muridae Isle.

Dear Darwin is an illustrated children’s book about a quiet, gentleman mouse who loves tea, flowers and mountain adventures…this is a book for fans of classic tales and hand drawn illustrations.

Written, Illustrated and Designed by Jime Wimmer with Wimmer Studios and self published through a successful Kickstarter Campaign combined with Darwin’s Tea.

Meet Darwin, a hardworking little mouse who has a thirst for adventure and a thirst for tea. In the intro, we learn that his favorite tea blend uses vanilla, which comes from a distinct exotic place he visits only once a year. But after the adventure concludes, his tastebuds might favor lavender over vanilla.

Darwin enjoys picking berries, picking flowers to spruce up his home, and sketching wildflowers. While most people would put flowers in a vase for decoration, Darwin has another use, particularly violets. Darwin likes to put them on his biscuits and cookies to make them appear more festive. If you’ve watched any cooking show, you’ve seen chefs adding a pop of color with edible flowers. It can make a dish or dessert go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Darwin’s friends knew of his appreciation for flowers. One night, as Darwin was sitting at his writing desk, his good pal Elderon delivered a letter explaining that they saw the most beautiful lavender fields during one of their flights. They’ve drawn a map leading Darwin to its location. Much like the adorable mouse, kids might wonder what color lavender is. What is it good for? Readers will find out both answers as they listen to the story unfold.

As Darwin sets off on his grand adventure, he bumps into Squirrel Newton, who has no helpful information regarding lavender. Still, he does advise who the mouse should talk to and gives him a parting gift: acorns, a squirrel’s favorite snack. The cute illustrations keep coming along as Darwin heads to the pier. Darwin’s passport was adorable, and I loved the crane’s hat and pocket watch. But the real showstopper was Darwin’s mode of transportation, the Windboat. Imagine a hot air balloon with a glider attached to its base. Very creative and beautifully drawn.

When Darwin’s aircraft lands on Muridae Isle, the real adventure begins. He has to avoid poisonous mushrooms while crossing Webcap Creek and gain permission to pass through the Lunar Silk Forest. How and to whom grants his request will stay a secret until YOU read the story!

Darwin’s travels take him to the Highlands, where he meets a very large animal (no spoilers). Lucky for the mouse, this creature’s dinner preference lies with snow rabbits. Darwin was also fortunate that this animal gave him a landmark to look for that would lead him to Lavender Valley.

Darwin’s journey was long, and his body grew weary with each step, but it was worth it in the end, reinforcing the famous quote, “Good things come to those who wait.” The fields gave off a lovely aroma, delighting the mouse’s senses. Darwin was thrilled to see lavender matched his favorite violets, too.

After you read the story, ask your child or class if they have a favorite flower, color, sweet treat, snack, or drink. Teachers can make this a “get to know me” project. Another learning project would be to ask your child or students to list the landmarks in the order the mouse traveled or create their own map and legend focusing on their city or state.

I was impressed the writer also did the illustrations. That’s not something I see every day. Darwin looked dapper in his long-sleeved white shirt, green vest, and round glasses. I loved his writing desk and how the illustrator chose a quill for the mouse’s writing instrument—very fancy! Darwin’s bookshelf was a beauty, too. I loved the addition of a sliding ladder, a feature all home or public libraries should possess. I had mixed feelings on the map, though. I would’ve liked the symbols to be a different color or even liven up the map with one or more colors. It was too dark and drab, a stark contrast to the other illustrations. I also would’ve eliminated the highlight on the compass. It didn’t elevate the image. It made my eyes focus on it instead of the compass direction.

I enjoyed reading about Darwin’s journey to Lavender Valley. I recommend sharing it with children three years and up.

One of my earliest memories revolves around my mom watching soap operas. From 11-3, she watched one after another. Her soaps featured romance, lies, betrayal, suspense, and wild storylines. You could never trust a character to be dead because people notoriously defied death. And if a character did, in fact, meet their maker, a person could return to the show as a twin. A Fallacious Seduction had every quality of a daytime soap opera except it’s set in 1870, not present-day like what you’ll find airing on TV.

A Fallacious Seduction has a dramatic start when an explosion rockets a train off the track, leaving only two survivors: Shanna and US Marshall Reese Calhan. One could question the validity of only two survivors or how convenient it was that Reese’s horse (Pegasus) also survived the fiery crash. And what are the chances Reese would come face-to-face with a woman he thought died years ago? But in the land of fiction, there are no rules.

Most of the story centers on four points: Reese is adamant that Shanna is his ex and wanted criminal Jenna. Shanna firmly and repeatedly refuted his allegations. Reese keeps questioning where Jenna’s boys are. Reese fights his attraction to a woman that shattered his heart. The more they battle over Shanna’s identity, the more it becomes crystal clear why Shanna looks like Jenna. It was blatantly obvious. Why couldn’t Reese see it? Oh yeah, the writer didn’t want him to…yet. But, one pivotal moment gave Reese undeniable proof that Shanna was not Jenna!

Shanna and Jenna looked the same, but that’s where their similarities stopped. Jenna is a character you’ll love to hate. Shanna is a fearless heroine who will defend herself against any man, and her self-preservation skills were tested on multiple occasions. She has big cojones!

A Fallacious Seduction has a sweet ending – mirroring everything Shanna always wanted. (Read the story for more information).

I love being an author. It’s all about where your characters lead you. I start with a general idea. As the story unfolds I type as fast as I can in hopes I keep up with my characters. They have had me jotting on napkins, making notes while I’m waiting in a line, and waking me up in the middle of the night. The hard part is always the ending. My characters live with me and when I reach the end of the story, it is hard to say goodbye.Sometimes I let the story sit for a few days to make sure I’m okay with them leaving home to get published. Kind of like when you kids move out. LOL

I enjoy my grandchildren, and the time I share with them. They make me smile with their antics. I like to quilt, crochet, knit and sew. Cooking and baking are occasional itches I scratch. The rest of the time, they are necessary evils. LOL.

My greatest support comes from my husband. He has been my sounding board for all my stories. My daughters are also a great support to me. I couldn’t do it without my family.

I’ll Melt Your Heart: An Opposites Attract Winter Romance Story by Alena Ryu (Book Review)

Sienna lives in a world where magic is a privilege for the rich and noble.
And Sienna is neither.

She is hunted by people who want to take away her powers; if they succeed, she will lose her ability to feel emotions. Then one fateful day, there’s a knock on her door…

As she escapes, Sienna falls into the arms of a handsome and mysterious man, a noble count who has no reason to help her. Or does he?

The count offers Sienna a deal—the kind she can’t refuse.

I’ll Melt Your Heart is a cozy romance story about two unlikely companions embarking on a journey to change their past and find their future.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reedsy Discovery.  I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Sienna Lynn, aka Catherine Starr, has been on the run from the Seventh Division since she was sixteen. Why? Because she was illegally in possession of magic. Magic was only intended for nobility to use. Anyone else caught using magic would arrested and turned into a “pacified one.” This means the purified ones couldn’t hate or love after the Rite of Purification. They were described as the living dead, obedient only to the imperial house.

Sienna/Catherine, a witch, tried to hide from Nelson, the exorcist, and the gendarmes, but they still caught up to her, thanks to her so-called friends. Since she couldn’t trust her “friends,” it was no wonder she didn’t trust her savior, Count Adam Darkwood. Adam was upfront that he was using her for her fire magic. No, he didn’t want to stay warm 24-7 like her. Instead, Adam needed Catherine/Sienna’s magic for the wishing well. Adam’s wish will remain hidden until you read the story. I will say this much: at Darkwood Hall, there laid a wishing well surrounded by demons. A wish is granted if you’re willing to pay the price: give up your magic. Adam wanted to offer up Sienna’s magic instead of his own.

A spark began to form as the count and the witch traveled on a train and then on foot. Of course, they didn’t truly realize how much the other meant to them until their backs were against the wall and demons attacked from all sides. Speaking of demons, I would love to see a sketch of the huge gray lizard with orange crystals protruding from its back. Just a sketch, though. I would not like to face off with it or any other demon found in the “cursed ruins.” I would, though, like to possess Sienna’s power since I always have trouble staying warm.

I’ll Melt Your Heart is a cozy, opposites-attract romance story that has magical elements and evil in the form of humans and demons. There are zero curse words and explicit scenes, making it perfect for teens and adults. It doesn’t have a cliffhanger, either.

If you love reading fantasy, romance, or magical stories, check out I’ll Melt Your Heart! Watch as Sienna/Catherine melts Adam’s frozen heart without using her fire power and as Adam shows Sienna/Catherine that it’s okay to trust again.

The Taekwonderoos: Rescue at Rattling Ridge by Michael Panzner (Book Review)

Come Join the Adventure!

Hop into an action-packed adventure with George, Brianna and Jackson, kangaroo friends who are masters of taekwondo. When they spot a frightened joey trapped at the top of treacherous Rattling Ridge, the three Taekwonderoos spring into action, using their kicking, jumping and spinning skills to navigate cliffs, boulders and ravines on a daring rescue mission. This thrilling tale of bravery celebrates how courage, quick-thinking, and teamwork can overcome any challenge.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art whose practice is well-known to improve a student’s posture, flexibility, balance, and stamina. Besides the physical benefits, it also improves mental health by increasing self-esteem, confidence, and self-discipline. It also enhances a person’s focus, which is important when delivering strikes and kicks. Taekwondo also teaches compassion, courage, and kindness, qualities that George, Brianna, and Jackson needed when they raced off to help a kangaroo in distress.

When the trio discovered the joey (young kangaroo) afraid, alone, and helpless on the cliff, the friends banded together to save the youngster from danger. They relied on their individual strengths and assisted each other to complete a job. George’s sharp mind enabled him to plan out their mission. Jackson’s fast-moving paws and precision kicks made constructing a ladder out of vines and branches look easy-peasy. The rocks were no match for Brianna’s impeccable reflexes. All three of them worked as a team, kicking, spinning, and chopping their way into a beautiful, sturdy bridge that could transport them safely over the ravine.

The death-defying rescue mission at Rattling Ridge in Australia reminded the trio that they could overcome challenges by working together. They stressed that bravery and quick thinking are crucial when facing danger. They also mentioned how discipline, focus, and determination are powerful allies. More importantly, the three kangaroos gained a new respect for one another.

The Taekwonderoos: Rescue at Rattling Ridge is an action-packed children’s book that teaches readers the importance of teamwork, helping others, utilizing your strengths, and summoning courage when tackling any challenge. In addition to that, it also has phenomenal illustrations that will impress and delight readers, young and old.

I recommend the story for preschoolers and up.
