In the first several months, parents and babies will share many firsts: first smile, first laugh, the first time they roll over, plus many more. Around the 5th month mark, some babies start rocking, and soon after, they begin exploring their environment on all fours. They go from moving at a snail’s pace to zooming around the house, touching everything at eye level, and putting anything in their path into their mouth. They are constantly on the go, and parents reach a new level of tiredness.

Gator Gray, a lively baby, was always on the move. He could be found under the table, under the bed, or in one location and then mysteriously gone the next. The dad’s exasperated call to his other two sons, “Go and find some glue,” had me chuckling. The text and accompanying illustrations of Gator Gray with his finger up his nose and his toes in his mouth were equally amusing. Parents, if you thought only your child behaved this way, rest assured you are not alone. Gator Gray’s adventures are a mirror image of every energetic child!

When the day came when Gator Gray pushed himself upright, I knew the parents’ days of rest were not quite upon them. Yes, it’s a monumental day when our child takes their first step. However, a child on their feet is quicker and more apt to get into mischief, which spells the end of relaxing while the child is awake. Like the parents in this humous children’s book, we quickly learn the importance of baby-proofing every door cause if a child reaches a doorknob, they will escape.

I adored reading Gator Gray Gets Away. It read like any day from my children’s first couple of years. I highly recommend sharing this with your children, especially if a new baby is coming. There were a few grammar errors, but the laughs this adorable picture book brought me far outweighed any shortcomings. It’s a must-read for parents!

Sit back, relax, and read Gator Gray Gets Away. Read fast, though, because if your youngster is like Gator Gary, they won’t sit still long!

“In the spirit of classics like Pippi Longstocking, Matilda, and Mary Poppins, this book will create shared cherished, magical memories that last a lifetime!”

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word grandma? Did you picture a little old lady with gray hair who moves at a snail’s pace? A purse containing butterscotch candies? An endless stream of tissues coming from her sleeve? Did you suddenly smell a batch of fresh-baked cookies or the cream for her aching body? These are stereotypical descriptions of a grandma. These do not describe Mel’s grandma, Marjorie Fish!

At a young age, Marjorie Fish vowed never to grow up, and she kept that promise. Grandma’s outer form resembled an older adult, but inside, she had the spirit and energy of a young kid. I was most impressed that she could juggle and play the piano simultaneously! Amazing!

Mel discovered her grandma differed from other kids’ grandparents. Having a parrot is not such an out-of-the-box idea for a pet. Having a parrot that towers over an adult because the humans have magically shrunk is! Grandma and Mel soared around town on the back of Grandma’s feathery sidekick, Misty Morning Crimson Sunset (Misty, for short). They first landed on a lighthouse where trouble awaited in the form of seagulls. Seagulls are notorious for stealing people’s belongings, but Grandma wasn’t giving up the goods without a fight. You’ll have to read the book to discover how she bested the annoying birds.

Grandma’s energy didn’t waver once during the adventurous ride. She soared through the skies, took on a flock of seagulls, nosedived off Misty, and still had the energy to make brownies. Phew. I hope I have an eighth of her energy when I reach her age!

Grandma Marjorie and the Feathered Pirate celebrate grandmas worldwide and the joy and fun they bring us—evident in the entertaining storyline and rib-tickling illustrations. I recommend reading it the next time you visit your grandma!

The synopsis states the book is intended for children 3-12.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Dingo Toad lived in the southern swamp region of planet Venesha. This uniquely illustrative character’s fashion sense resembled what Earthlings wear daily: t-shirt, shorts, and open-toed shoes. Dingo was also sporting a white mohawk. Nice hairdo!

While the alien’s style was something you’d see here on our planet, Dingo had features that definitely screamed Alien! For one, Dingo had large yellow spots covering their teal skin. They also had a toad-shaped face with two oversized eyes and mouth, two holes for nostrils, a purple tongue, three large toes on each foot, and four fingers on each hand.

While Dingo Toad looked different than you or me, they enjoyed many of the same things as us. Dingo looked very adorable playing in the bubble bath. I found it cute that Dingo was listening to his mom read him Nortis Goes Swimming—another book by Lamar and Liana Golden. Dingo shared one important similarity with humans: their planet, like ours, had bullies. When Dingo saw his friend, Penny, being bullied by Sangu and Piman, he did not hurry away. Dingo didn’t throw punches, either. He, very sternly, demanded they apologize for being “meanies,” which they did immediately.

Unfortunately, kids will encounter bullies during their school years. Maybe they will be the target, or perhaps they’ll witness someone else being harassed. No matter the situation, kids should follow Dingo’s example —use your words, not your fists. Not every bully apologizes as quickly as they did in this story. That is where the extended lesson on how to deal with bullies should be addressed with your child or class. Ask kids what they would do if their friend is being bullied, and the “meanies” don’t stop when asked.

Dingo Toad Helps a Friend is a wonderful sci-fi children’s book that shows the importance of standing up to bullies and the power of our words. I loved every colorful and imaginative illustration. The wild and wacky zoo animals were my favorite! Even though I won’t be placing flies in my ice cream or other foods any time soon, I even thought the bug-infused desserts were cute, too.

Check out this and every book featured on the planet, Venesha!

Amazon’s recommended reading age is baby-12 years.

Bob and Fluffy’s First Adventure: A Story of Kindness and Friendship is a touching story of a boy with a big heart who helps a lost puppy find their furever home.

Bob walked the same checkered path through his neighborhood. He loved smelling the colorful wildflowers. As he rounded the bend, passing the big oak tree, he heard a soft whimper from the tall, leafy bushes. There lay a cold and hungry puppy. I’m not a dog breed expert, so I have no idea what kind was pictured. But I can safely say the white puppy was very cute with his white mustache!

Big-hearted Bob knew he couldn’t leave the frightened and starving puppy alone, so he offered to take the pup home for warmth and food. Then, they would go in search of his family. Bob knocked on several doors, hoping the lost pup recognized someone as their family. As a proud cat owner, I laughed at the old lady with nine cats! One glance at each kitty, and you’ll know exactly how they feel about the dog encroaching on their turf. I particularly liked the crossed-eye cat playing with the red, round ball; they were in their own little world.

The page of 11 doors was a creative touch. The line-up lets readers picture the small child and pup knocking on each one, growing sad with each door closing. I also liked the door designs. It’s a perfect stopping point for a teacher to ask students what their door looks like. They can even draw theirs for a lovely classroom wall display.

Though Bob and Fluffy’s First Adventure: A Story of Kindness and Friendship concludes with a happily ever after, the duo’s quest is filled with different emotions. We watch as two optimistic beings slowly lose hope before reaching the all-smiles final scenes.

Bob and Fluffy’s First Adventure: A Story of Kindness and Friendship teaches the value of kindness, perseverance, and the joy of finding new friends in unexpected places. Share this story with your family and class.

War has affected many generations. Innocent people did not ask to be a part of the conflict, but many face its cruelty, the destruction it brings, the lives lost because of it, and the mental or physical harm it leaves behind. Space Elves Defend Their Planet‘s message is this: “War is never an answer to solve problems. People can disagree and argue but fighting only makes things worse. Spend time working together to find solutions that can benefit all life on the planet because war will destroy everything.”

Lord Droxy, the elf leader on Planet Doom, wanted to expand his reign, setting his sights on Planet Rain. The power-hungry elf gave Lord Ruffles 6 days to surrender and become part of Planet Doom, or else there would be war. This ultimatum is not unheard of and is the root of many wars, past and present. Lord Ruffles, the elf ruler of Planet Rain, knew that if he couldn’t reason with the tyrant, his planet would have to fight for their freedom. Lord Droxy reacted in true dictator form – it’s either his way or prepare to face his wrath.

Lord Ruffles knew this was a battle his planet couldn’t face alone; they needed reinforcements and help from neighboring planets. I loved the inclusion of the Space Federation. It gave me Star Trek vibes!

The Space Federation’s council acted in the same manner NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Its fundamental goal is to safeguard the members’ (countries’) freedom and security by political and military means. The council, like the space one in the sci-fi story, votes on whether or not to offer aid to those not a part of the organization. Did the Space Federation provide military assistance to Lord Ruffles and Planet? Read the story and find out!

Though Space Elves Defend Their Planet is a purely fictional read, there are elements that people in the real world face daily. Homes lost, lives lost, relocating to a safer country, and things we cherish are buried under rumble or turned to ash. I agree with the author’s plea: “Let’s all work together to find a peaceful solution and end all wars.”

The wonderfully written and illustrative sci-fi book accurately demonstrates war’s ripple effect on the world, so let’s encourage children to use their words instead of fists or other weaponry.

I recommend Space Elves Defend Their Planet to children ages 5-10.
