Space Elves Enjoy Politics by Lamar Golden and Liana Golden (Book Review)

A must have book for parents, children and especially for teachers in the classroom setting! This book allows children to think independently about what they want and determine what is most important to them. What parents and teachers alike will love about this book is that it is interactive, allows children to think critically at a level they can understand, as well as participate in the story to determine the outcome.

The most amazing part of this book is that it teaches children at a basic level about cooperation, sharing, and solving problems that benefit all while they are still young enough to care. Our future leaders deserve a fun and interactive way to dive into the world of politics with topics that are appropriate for their age. I think you will be surprised with how your child responds and more importantly it sparks the conversations within each school and household on how to integrate problem solving and debate in a fun and safe manner for future generations.

Understanding how our government operates can be confusing for young kids. Heck, even some adults are confused about the extent of their “powers.” Space Elves Enjoy Politics takes readers to the far reaches of outer space to teach us how the Senate works on alien planets. While some aspects of their government differ from our planet, we share a common goal: to help their planet and its inhabitants.

The Space Federation of Elves consists of 2,000 planets and 200 senators, each responsible for ten planets. That vastly differs from the United States, where each state has only two senators. I wish our planet followed the elvish planets’ lead: each senator can ONLY serve six years. This rule ensures we have new people and ideas – not the same people holding positions for decades like those on our planet.

Like ours (U.S.A.), the alien government is divided into political parties. America has several parties, whereas the alien nation has only 3: Repubies (Republicans), Demis (Democrats), and Indies (Independents.) Leaders of these parties each take to the Senate floor asking their co-leaders to vote for their side. They are offering a delicious treat to those who do. D- Senator Rumples vows to throw a BIG ice cream party if you vote for the Demis. R-Senator Dumples proclaims they’ll have a cake party if they win the vote. And I-Senator Mumples is sweetening the pot by offering a cake, ice cream, and cookies party! Decisions…decisions…

Depending on their chosen party, readers will be instructed to move to a specific page. Choose Demis – advance to page 9. Vote Repubies – flip to page 10. If you want all three dessert options, side with the Indies and turn to page 11. Each page asks readers another question, centering on the sweet treat party they chose to attend.

As Senators settle in on Capitol Hill, the Vice President (head of Congress) calls business to order. Fiction resembles reality as the writer notes that the session takes a long time because the parties cannot unite on an issue. Every day, in the real world, we watch as our representative spar verbally, getting little to nothing done on important issues. Without unification, our nation will be forever divided. The writer states that Demis and Repubies argue like babies and can’t play nice together. Spend five minutes with the bickering sides, and you’ll see the truth of the author’s claim.

I applaud the writers’ final message: kids are the future leaders of the planet, so speak up because your opinions do matter!

I liked the premise behind Space Elves Enjoy Politics: teaching kids about the Senate, its role, and the importance of teamwork. I disagree with Amazon’s recommended reading age: baby-16 years. I would suggest this book to 5–10-year-olds. Also, if the buyer’s/reader’s intent was to educate themselves or others about the United States Senate, you won’t learn 100% accurate info with this kid’s book. I would’ve preferred the author used the same rules you’d see here in America but with an alien twist. Also, I would have moved the “count the number of treats” game to the after credits and not placed them directly in the story.

This book is a work of fiction, so take the Senate’s info with a grain of salt. I recommend researching America’s Congress with your class and family. List the ways the space elves Congress resembles or differs from the U.S.A. For older kids, you can also get their feelings on current events. Again, reinforce the author’s message to let your voice be heard!

Dear Darwin by Jime Wimmer (Book Review)

Dear Darwin does love a good cup of tea while writing in his journals. One night, a late knock at his door catches Darwin by surprise. Soon he will begin his adventure across his beautiful island home, Muridae Isle.

Dear Darwin is an illustrated children’s book about a quiet, gentleman mouse who loves tea, flowers and mountain adventures…this is a book for fans of classic tales and hand drawn illustrations.

Written, Illustrated and Designed by Jime Wimmer with Wimmer Studios and self published through a successful Kickstarter Campaign combined with Darwin’s Tea.

Meet Darwin, a hardworking little mouse who has a thirst for adventure and a thirst for tea. In the intro, we learn that his favorite tea blend uses vanilla, which comes from a distinct exotic place he visits only once a year. But after the adventure concludes, his tastebuds might favor lavender over vanilla.

Darwin enjoys picking berries, picking flowers to spruce up his home, and sketching wildflowers. While most people would put flowers in a vase for decoration, Darwin has another use, particularly violets. Darwin likes to put them on his biscuits and cookies to make them appear more festive. If you’ve watched any cooking show, you’ve seen chefs adding a pop of color with edible flowers. It can make a dish or dessert go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Darwin’s friends knew of his appreciation for flowers. One night, as Darwin was sitting at his writing desk, his good pal Elderon delivered a letter explaining that they saw the most beautiful lavender fields during one of their flights. They’ve drawn a map leading Darwin to its location. Much like the adorable mouse, kids might wonder what color lavender is. What is it good for? Readers will find out both answers as they listen to the story unfold.

As Darwin sets off on his grand adventure, he bumps into Squirrel Newton, who has no helpful information regarding lavender. Still, he does advise who the mouse should talk to and gives him a parting gift: acorns, a squirrel’s favorite snack. The cute illustrations keep coming along as Darwin heads to the pier. Darwin’s passport was adorable, and I loved the crane’s hat and pocket watch. But the real showstopper was Darwin’s mode of transportation, the Windboat. Imagine a hot air balloon with a glider attached to its base. Very creative and beautifully drawn.

When Darwin’s aircraft lands on Muridae Isle, the real adventure begins. He has to avoid poisonous mushrooms while crossing Webcap Creek and gain permission to pass through the Lunar Silk Forest. How and to whom grants his request will stay a secret until YOU read the story!

Darwin’s travels take him to the Highlands, where he meets a very large animal (no spoilers). Lucky for the mouse, this creature’s dinner preference lies with snow rabbits. Darwin was also fortunate that this animal gave him a landmark to look for that would lead him to Lavender Valley.

Darwin’s journey was long, and his body grew weary with each step, but it was worth it in the end, reinforcing the famous quote, “Good things come to those who wait.” The fields gave off a lovely aroma, delighting the mouse’s senses. Darwin was thrilled to see lavender matched his favorite violets, too.

After you read the story, ask your child or class if they have a favorite flower, color, sweet treat, snack, or drink. Teachers can make this a “get to know me” project. Another learning project would be to ask your child or students to list the landmarks in the order the mouse traveled or create their own map and legend focusing on their city or state.

I was impressed the writer also did the illustrations. That’s not something I see every day. Darwin looked dapper in his long-sleeved white shirt, green vest, and round glasses. I loved his writing desk and how the illustrator chose a quill for the mouse’s writing instrument—very fancy! Darwin’s bookshelf was a beauty, too. I loved the addition of a sliding ladder, a feature all home or public libraries should possess. I had mixed feelings on the map, though. I would’ve liked the symbols to be a different color or even liven up the map with one or more colors. It was too dark and drab, a stark contrast to the other illustrations. I also would’ve eliminated the highlight on the compass. It didn’t elevate the image. It made my eyes focus on it instead of the compass direction.

I enjoyed reading about Darwin’s journey to Lavender Valley. I recommend sharing it with children three years and up.

You can tell by the cover that Bentley’s Best Birthday Ever! by Claire Eckard will be a fun read. I loved the expression on Bentley’s face, and the cake looked cute, too, with its dog bone candles and color scheme

Well done, Anne York (the illustrator)!!

The cuteness did not stop with the cover. The entire story and illustrations were adorable. If you’ve read Bentley and the Magic Sticks!, you’ll recognize familiar faces from that story. If you haven’t read it, no worries. You’ll still adore watching Tia, Fairy Dogmother, and many of Bentley’s friends work together to give him the best dog party ever! If you love the color pink, you’ll flip for Anne York’s drawing of Rachel. She’s hard to miss. 😉

Everything about Bentley’s Best Birthday Ever! screams fun.

There was a couple of sad moments, but, in the end, every dog had a massive smile on their face.

After the story, there’s a “Bentley’s Fun Page.” It contains “special Bentley words” and “how many” questions. Perfect bonus features for at-home or in-class school setting.

Great job, Claire Eckard, on creating an incredible story with lovable characters and a sweet plot.

Bobos Babes Adventures: The Missing Egg by Karen M. Bobos was an adventurous tale highlighting the goodness in people. Three sisters, all living in a land called Harmony, were known for their good deeds. Angel Scarlett, Princess Daphne, and Cora (the fairy) used their magical powers to spread joy and help those residing in their charmingly named land.

In this tale, the Bobos Babes banded together to help a swan find his missing unhatched baby. During their search for the bundle of joy, we meet three of swan’s buddies.

Young readers will love all the animals and the sweet sisters. For the animal friends, Emily Hercock (illustrator) gave all of them a distinct personality. For me, I loved sunglass-wearing Armando, the armadillo.

As for the three sisters, their dresses were not all pink, and this will please young kids who don’t fancy the color pink—like my daughter.

On a side note, I loved the “Did you know” bubble in the story. I did not know the fun fact. (no spoilers) 🙂

The first book of the series, The Case of the Giggles, was published in December 2020. The Missing Egg launched in March 2021. Thus far, she has written ten Bobos Babes Adventures and two chapter books. Two additional books, The Lion’s Secret and The Bobcat Birthday Party, are coming in 2021.
