Falling in Deeper by Shayla Black (Book Review)

Series: A Wicked Lovers Novel (Book 11)
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Berkley (July 5, 2016)

A tragic past threatens to destroy a passionate future in this dangerously sexy new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Wicked for You.

After a violent tragedy nearly destroyed her, Lily Taylor ran away, changed her name, and started over. When her deadly nemesis resurfaces to eliminate his loose end, she turns to the last man she should trust—a stranger with a history of violence and an intoxicating sexuality she can’t refuse…

Though strong-armed into locating Lily to help put away a drug lord, ex-con Stone Sutter isn’t anyone’s snitch. When he finds the terrified beauty, he vows to keep her safe—but he isn’t sure he has the strength to shield her from his own desires.

As an unquenchable fire sparks between them, Lily’s tormentor stalks ever closer, and she must overcome her darkest fear to survive. Can she trust the bond she and Stone have formed as they’re falling in deeper?

Shayla has again captured my interest and my heart with one of her creations. In “Falling in Deeper”, Shayla had constructed a backstory so traumatizing I felt the pain and anguish right down to my very bones. (No spoilers)

But more importantly, I could also see the strength Lily possessed and I’m sure you will too.

Any number of the things Lily experienced would’ve broken most people, and yes, she was emotionally detached for a long while. However, deep down, her spirit wasn’t obliterated. We saw her come alive when Stone entered her life. We saw him come to life as well.

Death, heartache, lies, betrayal are all par for the course in this contemporary romance tale.

Of course, no Shayla Black story would be complete with the epic forgiveness scene because we all adore a HEA.

Something Old, Something New by Darcie Boleyn (Book Review)

A heartwarming, giggle-inducing romance from Darcie Boleyn, just in time for the wedding season!

Will you marry me…again?

When Annie Thomas agrees to give her ex away at his wedding to his boyfriend, she thinks she’ll be fine. With her three children at her side, she can handle anything. Then she finds out her gorgeous first ex-husband Evan Llewellyn is flying in from his glamorous life in New York to attend as well!

An unexpected pregnancy ended their relationship and as she stumbles through the ups and downs of life as a working single mum – helping everyone else find a happy ending along the way – Annie refuses to believe their old and incredibly hot spark can still exist.

It’s only when she and Evan are forced to face up to the past together that they’ll discover if they can have their own happily-ever-after too!

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Are you a divorcee? Divorcee with kids? How about, do you know anyone who is divorced with or without a child? If you answered yes to any of these questions (which I’m sure you did), then you can identify with Annie’s life. She is a divorcee, twice removed, and raising three children while working. She’s constantly asking herself, “Am I failing?”

Any caregiver can relate to this thought. We always wonder if we are doing enough, providing enough, giving enough of ourselves via time/attention. The scene where Annie was soaking in the tub and her son came in needing to poo, the very thing has happened to me — more than once. I’m sure it’s happened to you as well.

The next part might not touch home for most people. Her second ex-husband, Dex, is a gay man. Their marriage didn’t work, for obvious reasons, but they’ll always be best friends. Basically, they had the perfect divorce. She even walked him down the aisle when he remarried — this time to a man. 🙂

The gay wedding was spectacular. The cake was a work of art: fairytale castle upon two tiers of jelly beans, flowers, ivy, and likenesses of the three children plus Annie. This sugary concoction was almost too pretty to eat.

FYI: The speeches at the wedding will explain the jelly beans in case you’re puzzled about the cake decorations.

Moving on…..

The love between Dex and Trevor, their wedding, didn’t take the cake (no pun intended) as the most romantic moment of Something Old, Something New. The prize definitely goes out to Annie. What she does to show Evan the depth and the trueness of her feelings for him was one helluva grand, romantic gesture. If they didn’t live happily ever after — AGAIN — then these two are hopeless.

Well, these two are definitely hopeless……. HOPELESSLY IN LOVE.

Oh BTW, Darcie, you’ll be please to know you had the Bob the Builder tune stuck in my head all night long. Thanks for that. 🙂

Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate. Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.

When Time Comes by Cat Nicolaou (Book Review)

Athena can’t avert her eyes. Alex Dane is back in Greece. Her mind wanders in time, six years ago, to the island of Rhodes. Three lustful days with him and a precious gift he left her with. All she needs is a leap of faith, but will he fly? Dare they dream again “When Time Comes”?

You meet your crush, a rock star, have three fun days with him (in and out of the bedroom) and part ways …. in love. Hmm. I don’t believe in love at first sight. Nor do I think you can love someone after only three days, but hey, that’s just me. For the hopeless romantics out there, you’ll like this tale.

For me, the best part was the ending. I’m a sucker for a sweet, happy ending. (BTW: The ending was the sole reason why this book went from a score of 2.5 to a 3.)

Oh, I know I shouldn’t have to say this but I still am. I mean, I’m basically about to recite a lesson from Sex101.

Word of advice readers: Always glove up unless you truly know the person and know if they are disease free. It all worked out for Athena but others might not like receiving a “positive sign” from their doctor or, heaven forbid, an STD (which she didn’t have) Thank goodness!!

Cat Nicolaou lives with her family and many pets on a small island in Greece. She grew up surrounded by crystal clear blue waters and beautiful beaches. Living in such a peaceful area, she enjoys the idyllic setting around her. It is therefore not surprising that she likes to write romantic stories. Strolling by the seaside is where she gets all her inspiration. As an ever-romantic herself, she likes writing and reading stories with a happy ending, though she does torment her characters before they find a happy resolution.

Not being one of those authors who have been writing since childhood, it came as a real surprise to the people around her when she finally decided to do it. But “When Time Comes”, life has a way to show you what needs to be done and she finally realised that she had to put her stories on paper and let people know her.

The greatest joy of writing for her is seeing where the characters will take her every time she starts a story.

Besides spending time with books, she likes drinking coffee like a maniac and listening to music. She also enjoys riding her motorcycle because it makes her feel free. Do not, therefore, be surprised if her next book includes a biker.

Her debut novella “When Time Comes” was published in February 2015. A story set on the island of Rhodes where a famous rock star and an artist find love that can last forever.

Catalina and Manny were two people, of mature age, finding love again in an RV park. A setting which is a rarity in romance books. At least, I haven’t run across too many.

Also, most best-selling (romance) reads aren’t solely based around a couple over the age of 50 so I applaud Tena for stepping out of the “norm”.

In Catalina and the Winter Texan, Catalina and Manny had fiery and sweets moments — two adjectives also used to describe them (personally).

Of course, Manny wouldn’t call Cat totally sweet. He would definitely put her in the class of a MILF and she would concur he was a GILF.

Since they couldn’t help but kiss (often) and finally made love, my assessment is 100% true. 🙂

Before I wrap up this review, I want to address the amusing sections of Catalina vs. the computer. When Cat couldn’t figure out how to turn it on or how to do a internet search on it, I thought of my mom. My mom is computer illiterate. Heck, she can’t figure out texting and still uses a VCR which can be found flashing 12:00 regularly.

So, Tena, I want to say THANK YOU for making me smile.

To Dance Again by Hebby Roman (Book Review)

They say a woman never forgets her first love, and Maricel Cardona hasn’t forgotten Ramón Morales. She remembers dancing all night in Ramón’s arms to the sensual beat of their homeland, Puerto Rico. When her family forced her to move to the States, she didn’t know she was carrying Ramón’s child.

A self-made multi-millionaire, Ramón hasn’t forgotten Maricel and the passion he felt, dancing with her. Now, at the pinnacle of his success, he’s withdrawn from the world to safeguard his own secret. A secret that, if revealed, would change his life forever.

Reunited after twenty-seven years, will the high school sweethearts get a second chance at love or will their secrets tear them apart?

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Lovers reunited after so many years apart should spell a true, over the top, romantic read.

You know the type. The thin books you caught your mom or grandma reading. Pages turned so much the book looks older than it should and several pages have creases from being dog-eared.

This could’ve been one of those stories if it weren’t for the fact I didn’t feel a true emotional connection between Maricel and Ramón. For me, I needed more than a brief glimpse to their past.

I also didn’t like how late the revelation (you have a child) came about or the timing of it. It was as if the author couldn’t figure out when or how to divulge the info and just threw it out there.

For me, this book felt disjointed. I’m sure others will love it. It does have its appeal: sweet union of father/daughter and a HEA.

For me, I just found it lacking.
