Unshattered by Elena Kincaid (Book Review)

UNSHATTERED (Silver Cliff #1)

Siren Bookstrand, Inc.
April 21, 2015

After Anna James loses nearly everyone she loves and is betrayed by those she trusted, she sets out in search of a place that would bring her peace.  She knew she had found it when she arrived in a sleepy little town called Silver Cliff and she vows to never trust anyone with her heart again, especially a man she fears would not only break her heart, he’d incinerate it.

Nathan Kent has dealt with his own heartache and demons from getting off the path he was meant to be on. He decides to return to his home town to rebuild his life and the last thing he needs is to fall in love with a snarky girl who keeps her past under lock and key. He realizes quickly, though, that she is girl worth risking it all for and vows to make her his.

Their pull was undeniable, like fireworks on top of flaming bonfires. But Anna can’t help wonder if she and Nathan are strong enough to survive a past that keeps resurfacing or if fate will keep shattering the world around her.

STORY EXCERPT

What the hell was she thinking agreeing to this? She hadn’t seen Nathan since she went to his house to apologize and they shared not only a moment but an almost kiss, and now…now she was going out to dinner with him and the girls and freakin’ Joshua Dale. She liked Josh, and she actually felt bad about turning him down when he asked her out on a date. He was a good guy, sweet, funny, definitely cute, especially in his deputy uniform, but there hadn’t been a spark. Even if there had been, she still would have said no. Men like that were too easy to fall for and trust. Men like that would inevitably hurt her. The biggest difference between men like Josh and Trevor was that Josh would feel bad about it.

With Nathan, though, there wasn’t just a spark. There were fireworks…fireworks on top of flaming bonfires added to all the burners on the stove going at once and mixed with all the chemicals overreacting to each other in a lab. She was sure she could come up with even more metaphors, but she’d already made her brain hurt from overthinking things. Nathan did not just have the potential to break her heart, he could incinerate it.

This wasn’t a date, she told herself again. It was a group outing. That would be her mantra tonight.

She changed her clothes several times, made sure her makeup—though she didn’t wear much—looked flawless, and she wondered if Nathan preferred her hair up or down. Not a date. Not a date. Not. A. Date.

Okay, so maybe it really wasn’t a date, but a huge part of her wished that it was. She liked him…much more than she wanted to. How could I let this happen? She removed the clip from her hair, letting her silken locks fall straight past her shoulders. She sat on her bed with her head in her hands, berating herself for allowing these feelings. As if I had a choice. He somehow barreled into her life out of nowhere, demanding she reveal all of herself to him, and the worst part was that she wanted to. If she wasn’t running into him, she was thinking about him or thinking about ways to avoid thinking about him. And here she was just minutes ago, wondering which way she thought he would prefer her hair to be styled.

Distance. I need some distance. She would not be able to avoid him entirely, but she could try to limit the time she spent around him. That seemed like the best course of action, only the thought of not seeing him suddenly hurt her heart.

“Fuck!” She flung herself backward onto the bed, slamming her palms down on the mattress.

The doorbell rang. “Down it is,” she said, referring to her hair. When she opened the door, Nathan stood there wearing a cocky grin.

“Hi.”

“Um…hello.” Anna barely recognized her own voice. It came out as a sort of breathy squeak. She tried to peer past Nathan, into his car, but there was no one else with him.

Nathan turned his head to look behind him. When he turned back to face her, confusion marred his features. “Are you looking for something?”

“Where’s Ruby?” Ruby was supposed to be picking her up, Carla was meeting them at the restaurant right after her shift, and she wasn’t sure how Josh was getting to the restaurant.

“Ruby had a few last-minute errands, so I offered to pick you up.”

Anna finally realized she was being rude by not inviting him in, so she gestured him inside. “I’ll just go grab my bag.”

“My bag,” he mimicked in an exaggerated New York accent, making Anna laugh.

“Right, you guys say purse.” For the most part, Anna’s accent was nondescript, but certain choices of words and the pronunciations of them were definitely very Brooklyn. “You lived in the city. You should be used to it by now.”

“Mostly everyone I knew were transplants just like me, but I did get my daily dose of New Yawk City speak.”

“Oh shut it,” she said playfully. “We know there’s an r in there. I’ll just go grab my little ole purse.”

“No rush,” she heard him say on the way to her bedroom. There was still a trace of humor in his voice.

Something had just occurred to her. Bag forgotten, she walked back out into the living room.

“Wait, are we being set up again?” She was going to kill Carla. This was surely her doing. “Are they all going to come up with some excuse and not show up, leaving just the two of us at dinner?”

Nathan looked confused, or annoyed, at the possibility. She couldn’t tell which. “No. As far as I know, both Carla and Ruby are still coming, and you and I are going to go grab Josh from the station.”

Well that won’t be awkward at all, she thought. She went back into her room to grab her purse, and after locking up, they walked back to his car in silence.

As a humungous fan of Superman/Clark Kent, I gave a loud “whoop” when Elena referenced the man of steel and even gave the lead man the last name of Kent. It was a perfect fit for him too. He did come to Anna’s rescue when she needed him after her nightmares and dealing with PTSD. That poor woman had more than her share of troubling times and heartache. She lost both her parents, grandmother, and was the victim of physical and psychological abuse.

It takes a strong woman to bounce back from all that. Yes, she is one WONDERful WOMAN.

Oh yeah, I went there. HA!!

Oh and Elena, you are 100% correct — “Superman is way cooler than Batman.”

OK on a more serious note, these two were truly a memorable couple. They laughed together, cried together, and even managed to kick a little ass together. Well, maybe one more than the other BUT I won’t go into too much more detail. Buy the book and see who’s fanny took a beating and why.

Elena Kincaid was born in Ukraine and raised in New York where she currently lives with her daughter. She graduated college with a BFA in creative writing and started a graphic design business a few years later. She developed a passion for reading and writing at an early age and loves to write what she loves to read and that is romance with a paranormal twist. Her desk is constantly cluttered with journals, sticky notes, and torn out pieces of paper full of ideas.

When not working, Elena loves to spend time with her family, travel the globe, curl up with a good book, and catch up on her soaps.

Q: When did you first start writing?

A: I started writing when I learned how to write, but even before I learned how to write my stories down, I would share them with others or just enjoy and develop them for myself.

Q: What inspires you to write?

A: Anything and everything inspires me to write. I could either be watching television, listening to music, reading or I could be in the middle of a conversation with someone when an idea strikes. I particularly feel creative when it rains or when I am in the shower. The sound of the running water is very soothing and my imagination tends to take right over.

Q: What is your writing process like?

A: The general idea has to hit me first and then I work out several scenarios until I feel the story come to life. I’m a romantic at heart, so it’s usually, as they say in Hollywood, the “meet-cute” or what leads up to it that I think of first. I then work on really developing the characters and bringing them to life. I am usually writing paranormal romance, so the mythology would come next and then the conflict and resolution.

Q: Do you do any research?

A: Absolutely. I do some of it beforehand and the rest along the way as needed. I especially love to research existing mythology and then put my own spin on it. I think that the best advice for a writer would be to write about what you know and research the heck out of something you don’t.

Q: What time of the day do you get most inspired?

A: I am a night owl, so I definitely am most inspired at night. The house is quiet, I am wide awake, the phone has stopped ringing, and everything that had to be done for the day has been done, leaving my brain less cluttered.

Q: How do you handle writers block?

A: I get writers block if there is too much going on in my life or if I am stressed about

something. I can’t force myself to write. So if it’s just not happening, I need to leave it alone for a while. When I am ready to write again, I go back and re-read the last couple of chapters to get myself back in the right frame of mind.

Q: What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

A: I am an avid reader myself and do lot’s of fangirling, squeeing on many occasions, so I feel you need to have a very strong passion for reading if you are going to make it as a successful writer. Practice your craft because it’s not just about having a good imagination and coming up with great ideas. It’s also about execution and developing your characters well. Let’s not forget good grammar. Edit! Edit a lot. No one is infallible to the occasional typo, but how embarrassing is it to have your readers mentally giving you grammar lessons as they read your book.

In the Blind – Two strangers meeting in the dark at a club might sound raunchy. In normal circumstances, it might be but in this story Candy and Brad’s sex scene was rather sweet — cute even. Even though they had no idea who they were paired with on their “date”, I truly think (deep down) they knew. Or, I could be some romantic fool who sees more into a moment than what’s really there.

Hmm, nah, I’m right. Call it fate, serendipity or cupid striking them with an arrow, these two practically had “meant to be” tattooed on their pretty, little asses.

Far From Blind With tax season quickly approaching, I am not going to be able to look at my accountant the same way again. Seriously, all I will be able to think about is how many people had been bent over his desk while gifted a handful of booty slaps.

Damn…..ass spanking is HOT!! This story is a must read!!

Excerpt:

Gemma still ached all over, but the pain was now dull and tolerable. She knew her reprieve would be short. More pain waited for her throughout the night. Something was different, however. Warmth surrounded her on both sides as she rested on what felt like a soft bed. A pillow cushioned her head.

She opened her eyes and bolted upright when a warm, calloused hand brushed her cheek.

“Easy, you’re safe,” said a deeply rich and sexy voice. “Lie back down.”

She looked around the spacious bedroom and even through the muted light could see the room was tastefully decorated with dark wood furniture matching the dark wood bedposts. A creamy white chaise sat in the corner with a cozy-looking rich brown throw blanket dangling off the side of it. She imagined herself lounging on it with a good book and a glass of wine sitting atop the small side table next to the chaise. Gemma did in fact feel safe, safer than she had felt in a very long time. She complied with the gentle command to lie down, pulling up the chartreuse-colored sheet that had pooled around her belly when she had sat up and she sensed a blush creep onto her cheeks while doing so. The memory of what had happened earlier in the forest with the two gorgeous men beside her came flooding back to her as well. They had given her a ray of hope when she had none left.

At first she was on her guard, wary of anyone who dared approach her lest they were part of Pollux-Moon or in allegiance with them. Then she became angry that two complete strangers thought it their right to order her around, to touch her without her consent. She’d been in too much pain to realize that they only wanted to help her. So in agony and unfocused as she was, at first she hadn’t even realized that they were her mates.

Mates. I have mates. She closed her eyes briefly and savored the delicious scents that surrounded her. Her pain had been reflected in their eyes earlier when she had locked gazes with them after she realized who they were to her. One of them had hair the color of midnight and eyes of gold. His hard gaze had softened when she stopped struggling and let him examine her. She found him looking at her when she opened her eyes again.

“What’s your name?” he asked. He had a slightly deeper baritone than the one who commanded her to lie down.

“I’m Gemma. But my friends call me Gem.”

“You have a beautiful name, Gemma, Gem.” His smile was breathtaking. He looked so open and friendly, a complete contrast to how he had looked earlier when he was being bossy and commanding. “I’m Jordan. Alpha of the White-Moon pack. This is my brother and beta, Kane.”

She looked over at Kane—hair nearly as dark as his brother’s, but eyes a mossy green—and managed a small smile. Both men were large and muscular and exuded a power hard to miss. They had identical tattoos on their left pectoral—a wolf’s paw print with a wolf face inside it. The eyes of each wolf, however, matched its owner’s. A full white moon stood out behind the paw and the White-Moon pack insignia, in elegant script, rested underneath. They both sported various other tattoos, but that particular one was breathtaking.

“You had us worried there, little wolf,” Kane said. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I just clawed my way out of hell for a temporary breather.” She hadn’t meant to say that out loud.

Kane looked suddenly angry. “Who did this to you?”

Studies show that sex can alleviate pain, so Elena capitalizing on this “medical miracle” made me grin. Of course, Gemma didn’t have a simple headache. No, her pain was due to a serum administered into her body courtesy of the villain/werewolf, Pollux. Luckily for her, sex is the cure to what ails her. Double lucky she found her mates in her time of need, too. *big smile*

Speaking of her mates, I got a little weirded out they were brothers. The males didn’t shag each other but still…. I don’t roll that way. Of course, I’m not a werewolf either so…..

Lets discuss the plot —the takedown of Pollux. The fight was fast and no mercy was shown to the pack leader. Of course, he really didn’t deserve it. He was one evil S.O.B.

If you haven’t already guessed, this short story ends with a HEA (happily ever after).

“Come on in, Lydia. I want to talk about a few things before we get started today. We need to make it quick, since we need to report to Keller at ten this morning.” When she remained in her spot he added, “Lydia, come here.”
Not wanting Gina to take anything further from her, she lifted her head and walked to Jake. She stopped at his desk, but felt instantly unworthy. Gina was more Jake’s style. She fought the need to lower her chin.
“Look at me, Lydia.”
He pushed her. “Why?” She shifted her gaze and hit him with her direct stare.
“Thank you. I needed to see your eyes.” He reached out and swiped a lock of hair from her face. He tucked the strand behind her ear, and let his finger drag down her face to her shoulder. All the while his gaze captured hers, not letting go. “How are you this morning?”
“I’m okay.”
“Okay? Hmm, maybe I should do something to improve your mood? What would you say to that?”
“Here?” she gasped and quickly turned to look out the door.
He grabbed hold of her shoulders, lifting her slightly off the floor.
“Yes, here.” He brought their bodies together, claimed her lips and swept his tongue through her mouth, awakening her sexual hunger.
She felt wanted. She felt claimed. Images from the night before swam in her mind. Silly challenges from the office mean girl were all forgotten. He set her down and nipped at her lower lip.
“We have a lot to do today. Unfortunately we cannot go any further, now.” He stepped back behind his desk as casually as if he’d just greeted the mail man.
“But you would want to?” Still looking at the papers on his desk, she didn’t think he heard her. She took a step closer. “You would repeat last night?”
Her words stopped him. His gaze searched her face. Placing his hands on the desk he leaned forward and said, “Lydia, I fully intend to further explore your body and mind. After all, there are a few places I haven’t yet completely inspected.”
Her mind ran through what he had done to her last night, and there was only one place she could think of. Warmth fluttered through her face.
“Now, that is a beautiful sight.” He returned to his papers. “I’m going to have to keep thinking of ways to shock you simply to see you blush again.” With the papers properly sorted, his attention returned to her. “Is Gina a problem?”
Gina was a lot of things, but she’d never thought of her as a problem. “I don’t think so.”
“Don’t be afraid to put her in her place. She likes that more than she lets on. She’s the type to push so she can be pushed back.”
“I hadn’t thought of her that way. Interesting.”
“Let me know if she becomes a problem.” His gaze drilled into hers, not letting her escape.
“Okay.”
“Okay?” His posture remained controlled, but the smirk couldn’t be missed.
She added her own version of the devilish grin, which ignited another blush before she even spoke. “Okay, Sir.”
“Trouble.” He stalked towards her and ruthlessly swept his hand under the hem of her skirt to press firmly along her panties. His lips pressed to her ear. “Hot and damp.”
The palm of his hand pressed on her clit, and he bent his knuckles, sending the tips of his fingers past the edge of her panties to drag along her slit.
“Be careful what you say to me, sweetheart, or you’ll shatter my control.” With one last drag of his fingers, he pulled away and walked from the room.
She turned around and watched him go. Her heart pounded. All she could do was follow him, but she couldn’t move. The exchange with Jake left her bones unsettled, and the all too familiar ache tried to set-up shop in her chest. She hadn’t expected him to crave more from her, and now she couldn’t deny he did. Was she going to deny herself the pleasure of getting to know him?

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

I’ve read many BDSM books but I feel this one probably contained more emotion than about 90% of the others I have on my bookshelves. Lydia and Jake’s scenes weren’t all about fulfilling their kink needs, which I liked. Yeah, spankings and submitting is good but I like to see a couple connecting on a more higher level. That’s what makes a BDSM story more enjoyable, more memorable, in my mind.

On a final note, watching a person eat a banana has been known to elicit carnal thoughts to a happy observer but I’m thinking BBQ sauce is the new aphrodisiac.

Curious about that statement? Good then buy and read the book. 🙂

After much reflection, she ended up giving into her desire and taking Mr. Hot Model for lover. But what then after they traveled back to their separate lives?

Wait no more: They’re here to tell the continuation of their sizzling love story 🙂

minetolove2

The writing conference in sunny Cannes was fantastical, a dream. Back at home, reality catches up with author Andrea Johnson and the sexy cover model of her book, Yushka. With tough working schedules, challenging family relations, and seductive temptation from all sides, the couple’s explosive romance is put to the test.

Will their love be strong enough to have a future?

BOOK TRAILER:

EXCERPT:

While Yushka gets his duffel bag in the back seat, I lean against the side of the Corolla and stretch my arms on top of its roof. “You got everything?”

“Yeah.” He lifts the bag over his shoulder and tilts his head in direction of the front door. “We good to go?”

My pulse beats a little faster at the thought of him dropping that bag on my bedroom floor and lifting me in his arms instead. I’m so excited to be with him, I simmer inside, aching to touch and hold him. I want to have all of him at once, right now.

A spark of amusement plays in his gorgeous Asian eyes as he waits for me to make a move. “What’s on your mind, Princess?”

Holding his gaze, I smile, my fingers tapping a beat on the car hood to buy some time because I don’t know what to reply. I have a feeling whatever might come out of my mouth now, like I can’t wait to rip those clothes off you or I’m going to make you scream, will sound too cheesy. Why do we need to put our attraction into words, anyway? Once we’re home, there’ll be no reason to talk that much. We’ll do the talking with our more-than-capable hands and … um … mouths.

I tap a quick rap before stepping back from the car. “Come on.”

“Okay.” Widening his smile, he follows me to the front entrance.

I unlock and push the wood door open. “I hope your bag’s not too heavy. The elevator doesn’t work.”

“When are they gonna fix it?”

“Huh, good question.” I step forward, but when in the doorway, I spin to hold the door open for him. “I have no idea.”

“No?” With a raised brow, he passes me.

Just then, I move toward him, chest-to-chest, blocking him and his thick bag between myself and the doorframe.

“Oh!” He laughs.

As the door pushes into my back, squeezing me tighter against him, I put my hands on his waist. First above his clothes––the thick leather jacket and his shirt––then sneaking underneath both of them, my fingers splaying on his warm skin and stroking him.

Completely stuck, he tilts his head and stares into my eyes, his own sparkling with playfulness. “What are you up to?”

“You have a problem?” I move my hands out from beneath his shirt and go downward to palm his tight ass cheeks, pulling his crotch to me. My lower stomach and increasingly heating inner thighs seek to meet his. I want to be so near him he’ll feel my lust, and I want his lust to grow, too. I need us to join and be a match, a melting pot of desire, irresistible and untamable.

“I have to bribe you?” he asks, voice lower, and leans down to kiss me.

How did he guess? At the warm touch of his parted lips, delight rushes through me as if I’d had a shot of alcohol.

He retreats his face a few inches, enough to have a view of what he just kissed. “This good enough for you?” His voice comes out husky, a bit short of breath. With his free hand, he strokes and kneads my butt.

“One more,” I mouth with the next exhale of air. Though the door bores painfully into my back, I don’t want to move, loving the feel of being so close to Yushka, so intimate. It’s amazing how instantaneous and intense our connection is. Just wait till we get our clothes off.

Again, his warm lips land on mine, and we kiss greedily, nose-to-nose, wet tongues playing with each other. My inner pussy muscles clench, remembering too well what it’s like to have his cock inside. I breathe faster. A growing hardness in his crotch presses against me, provoking more tightening. Oh, God. Hot wetness glides down my pussy, wetting my panties. So ready, so soon… I mew into his mouth, and he rewards me with a guttural response, our mouths practically eating each other.

But this isn’t the right place. We need to move and play this torturous game and its grand finale somewhere else.

Releasing his lips, I gasp from our separation, but still manage to pull away.

“Fuck, you’re hot.” He inhales deeply and looks up, feverish eyes widening and trying to refocus.

As I step backward, forcing the door to open again, cold evening air sneaks between our heated bodies. “Let’s go,” I say with a croak, my chest heaving.

He gives a small nod and steps inside the low-lit lobby.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

When I was approached to read/write a review on Mine to Love, I hadn’t read The Perfect Shoot (book one). I think not reading it reflected highly on my thoughts on this book because I didn’t see or feel love between Yushka and Andrea. For me, it was all lust and I don’t see them having a long, healthy relationship. It could be because I didn’t watch their love blossom when they shared the weeks together in Cannes.

Let me explain my opinion why I don’t think these two have the goods to go all the way.

1.) They have major communication issues which led to a breakup. Instead of confiding in her about the curveball life has thrown at him, he leaves her and keeps shutting her out. He eventually comes clean but I see this being a recurring theme. He was too tight-lipped for 90% of the second book. Maybe 95%.

2.) They spend two weeks in the Cannes, she knows basically nothing about him but loves him. How can you truly love someone and want to spend your life with them if you don’t know them? You can’t, IMHO. A relationship can’t hold strong with only great sex. Which comes to my third point.

3.) In chapter 13, she states , “You, I trust.” Okay, I find this hard to believe because she thought he was cheating on her with her son’s ex-gf. Actually when Chad and Katie Lynn were still dating, Andrea thought something fishy was going on between Yushka and her. She still thought that when she broke up with him. Then days later, she suddenly trusts him completely. I call HOGWASH!!

4.) They never did resolve their issues with his behavior towards Katie; the looks he was giving her.

Again, maybe my views on Mine to Love wouldn’t be so harsh if I started from the beginning. However, some things you can’t simply overlook — like points 2-4.
