Life is busy, and eating nutritious foods at every meal can be a real struggle. Most families opt for take-out to save time and money and, let’s face it, the hassle of cooking. Besides those obstacles, people face dietary restrictions for themselves or a family member. Julia Matto’s daughter developed gluten sensitivity. “She had endured digestive issues and bloating, and her mood and concentration were off the charts.” Those same issues plagued Julia as well. As the author removed gluten from their diet, everything changed for the better! Julia discusses this and briefly explains gluten, including healthy food choices in the “Introduction.” Be sure and check it out! 

The Magic of Gluten-Free Cooking contains breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert meal ideas; 20 recipes in all. There were anywhere from 4- 16 ingredients per recipe. In those ingredients, there were spices/seasonings that most households have on the ready: cinnamon, pepper, olive oil, (kosher) salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and vanilla extract. However, a trip to the grocery store will be necessary to complete most of the recipes. They require fresh herbs, fresh produce, and (possibly) a need to restock your cabinets. 

I’m a visual person; if a food image looks scrumptious, I’ll be eager to prepare the food. Every recipe had a picture depicting what the food should roughly look like. “Red, White and Blue Berries Parfait with Greek Yogurt” looked divine. “Cranberry Apple Crisp” made my stomach growl. The “Oatmeal Raisin Cookies” and “Lemon Granita with Honey (Sicilian Lemon Ice)” activated my sweet tooth. 

While the dessert portion of the book had mouth-watering pictures, the rest of the food portraits did not have me reaching for a fork. The “Steak and Eggs” and “Chicken Piccata” were visually unappealing, and the blueberry pancakes in “Blueberry Pancakes with Chicken Sausage and Avocado” looked burnt to a crisp. 

Despite my feeling about the food presentations, I’m still inclined to try the recipes. The directions are easy to follow and introduce new foods into my diet.

We all, at some point, need inspiration on what to cook. Pictures of what people are eating and how-to videos for preparing different cuisines are hot commodities.  

If you’re lucky, you have a family recipe book that houses delicious food passed down from one generation to the next. Whether you have a book, binder, or recipe box full of recipes or want to start one of your own, I’d consider using My Secret Recipes by Pixie Publishing House. This cooking journal lets you store seventy-five recipes in one location.

Each card has basic information: recipe name, ingredients, and directions. There was also a serving size chat and preparation time. While this was standard information for a card, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was a place to mark which category the recipe falls under: vegetarian, dairy-free, low carb, sugar-free, and low salt. There are countless diets and dietary restrictions on the market, so this check box area benefits those seeking a specific recipe to fit their nutritional needs, families, and guests. 

Another feature that impressed me was the star rating. Have you ever looked through your recipe box and tried to remember if the food was a hit or miss? Was there an aspect of said recipe that needed tweaking? If so, this portion allows short notes. For instance, you could shade 3 out of five stars and add “too spicy” or “bland” under the rating system. 

My Secret Recipes would make an excellent housewarming gift. It would also be a fantastic idea for birthdays, bridal showers, Christmas, etc. It’s perfect for any gender, age, avid cooks, and individuals looking to spend more time in the kitchen and less on take-out. 

I recommend you purchase a copy for yourself and another for a friend or family member. And remember, “A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe (Thomas Keller).”

Frequent urination (incontinence) or late-night urination (nocturia) is an all-too-common dilemma that plagues adults and children. Those who suffer from either of these two issues might experience uncontrollable leakage. Accidents can cause embarrassment and make one shy away from social engagements, or when nighttime visits are the culprit, the afflicted don’t get adequate sleep.

Doug Setter speaks the truth when they openly discuss what lengths they went to when the urge to go was upon them and no restroom in sight. I haven’t peed in a bottle before, but that’s only because I am a woman and didn’t think my aim would hit the mark 100% of the time. As a person with weak bladder muscles, I am familiar with the need to go multiple times during events. It’s annoying, a nuisance, and can be embarrassing. 

Since I don’t have a prostate, I could not empathize with the author’s talk about the exam. However, the physical therapy intake exam to strengthen my bladder muscles was intrusive and made me uncomfortable. I had to complete exercises while the therapist monitored me internally, manually. So I can, in a way, relate to Doug Setter’s displeasure over the unpleasant physical exam. 

In chapter two, Doug discusses various reasons why a person might be having plumbing issues: UTI, excess consumption of liquids, diabetes, bladder stones, and kidney conditions to name a few. After these possible reasons, Doug included a detailed image of your “plumbing parts” and explained their function in simple terms. 

I would advise taking Doug’s “five-pronged approach to urinating less” before going straight to the scalpel to fix your urinary system and problem. Sometimes eliminating a trigger or doing Kegel (pelvic floor) exercises improves the matter. The good news about these exercises is anyone can do them, regardless of age, and anywhere too! If you’re unfamiliar with Kegel exercises, Doug gives you a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process.

I found photos of the exercises taught in yoga and other exercise systems helpful. You don’t have to wonder if you’re performing it correctly or not. I encourage you to read the steps, look at the pictures, and then try your hand at the four additional stretches. 

As I stated earlier, removing a trigger can improve or stop your symptoms. Chapter five mentions several food and beverage-related items that might be your culprit. My doctor has told me to avoid citrusy and acidic things, so their presence on the list didn’t shock me. However, my doctor never mentioned spices. I’ll have to examine that one in more detail. Now, all triggers do not have to be food-based. Stress can also play a factor. I never knew that either. I have realized that when I’m busy, I urinate less than when I’m bored. Maybe my mind is preoccupied and not focused on the need to go. Bored seems to be a trigger for me. 

No matter the organ, there will be things that make it perform poorly and superbly. Doug discusses both. On the good list is cranberries which I consume daily. There was also horsetail, something I’d never heard or seen before. 

Some sections are directed to male readers: boosting testosterone and prostate issues; however, both genders can benefit from bladder training, knowing what’s good and bad for their urinary health. 

If you have bladder control issues or know someone who does, read this book or share it with them. It might change their life or yours!

Doctor Marsha is a children’s book series created to entertain children at the preschool through grade school level relying on educational content. Our main character, Marsha, will introduce kids to exciting challenges in basic health education as she explores the world vanquishing health problems. It is my hope that the characters will stimulate young minds by introducing them to a positive, professional figure that embodies the spirit of cultural competence, creativity, and adventure.

Dr. Marsha and the Case of the Missing Hot Dogs and Marshmallows by ​Dr. Rachel B. Wellner M.D teaches young children about nutrition as they solve the puzzling mystery – Who stole all the hot dogs and marshmallows and why?


Preschool children will love the characters, who have human jobs and wear human clothing. In our house, Terrence Toad stole the show. My daughter thought the drawing of him with his tongue out while he was thinking about hot dogs and marshmallows was funny. 


What I liked about the story was the repetition. While there are several words I don’t think young readers will be able to decipher, I think older and more experienced readers will have no trouble. 


As for the mystery, it was fun guessing who we thought stole the “junk food.” After the mystery was solved, we discussed what “junk food” and healthy foods we liked to eat. Surprise, surprise, my youngest said she would eat marshmallows over oatmeal for breakfast. Sorry, Louie the llama. 


I don’t want to spoil why the hot dogs and marshmallows were stolen; however, the reason gave us an idea of what to draw during art time. For dinner, we also decided to make hot dogs and s’mores. 😀

Dr. Rachel Wellner is a board-certified general surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, most recently the Assistant Professor of surgery at the Monteflore-Einstein Center for Care. She has also been Director of Breast Services at NYEE/Continuum Cancer Center, Pascal Valley Hospital, and Palisades General Hospital. Dr. Wellner graduated Magna Cum Lauda and Phi Betta Kappa from Dartmouth College, earned her medical degree from the University of Connecticut and her Master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University. She pursued her surgical training at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and worked to establish a clinical rotation in an underserved region of The Dominican Republic. She completed Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited breast oncology fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California. She has been featured as a guest expert on several local and national news networks, including WPLX 11, Fox and Friends, and CNN.
