Children are not typically excited to clean up. They would rather eat a plate of Brussels sprouts than tidy up. Parents try every trick to motivate their kids to clean their bedrooms or playroom. They sing clean-up songs, give them a star on a chore chart, or reward them with a toy or treat for a job well done.

As children grow up, their allowance might revolve around the amount of chores they do or the time spent doing them. They might have a must-have item in mind, like a video game or skateboard. Tippie and Nala have decided to tackle household chores. They weren’t saving up for a cool toy. Nala hopes the thoughtful act will make their Mama happy, and she’ll reward them with extra carrots at dinnertime.

The two friends didn’t have great success doing chores last time; the house was messier than before they started. Swearing they be more careful this time, Tippie and Nala divided the duties and got to work. Despite good intentions, things quickly went south. Readers will laugh at the bubbles in the laundry room and feathers raining down in the bedroom.

Anger and raised voices are two common reactions to stepping into a mess, especially one of this magnitude. Tippie cried when being yelled at, and so would many other people in the same situation.. While becoming angry is easy, saying sorry is notKids need to understand that words have power: those said in anger and those asking for forgiveness. Nala apologized for yelling, an important moment in the story.

Readers also saw Nala and Tippie learn the importance of teamwork. As the duo tackled the messes, Tippie’s tears were replaced with laughter. When Mama came home, she thanked them for the effort and didn’t yell about the mess. She was proud they tried, which is the important part.

Messes will happen in life. Things will break. Tempers will want to rise. This story reminds kids (and adults) that getting angry solves nothing; it only makes matters worse. Instead, take a breath. Problem solve a solution. Own up to a mistake and be willing to work as a team to fix what’s broken.

Humorous illustrations. Important lessons learned. This is a must-read for children three years and older.

Tippie-Doo Mama Always Has The Last Laugh by Nyx Nightshade (Book Review)

Tippie (Tippie-Doo) and her siblings are mischievous donkeys who love to play tricks on their (human) mom. Tippie-Doo Mama Always Has The Last Laugh is a true account of the one instance when Tippie’s prank didn’t go as planned.

Carrots are a favorite snack item for donkeys, so when Daisy-Doo and Tippie-Doo saw Mama carrying a bag of carrots, they had the same idea: get the bag and hide the loot! Tippie-Doo’s mental blueprint plan reminded me of classic Looney Tune cartoons. The drawn-out plan looks sound, but you know it’s doomed to fail at some point. And when it does, you’ll be laughing!

Readers will giggle as Daisy-Doo zooms across the pen, a lunch bag dangling from her mouth, as their Mama chases after them. They might also snicker watching the human and donkey play tug of war with the sandwich. I bet readers will pick a side in the food battle: Team Donkey or Team Mama! Whichever side they choose to win, young listeners might be shocked to discover it was all for naught. While Daisy and Tippie were playing a trick on their Mama, behind-the-scene trickery was also happening to them. Before reading the conclusion, ask your child or class who they believe nabbed the carrots from Daisy and Tippie.

Through comedic text and imagery, Tippie-Doo Mama Always Has The Last Laugh teaches children that not everyone loves being tricked, and sometimes, a trick can backfire on you. It also stresses the importance of sharing and having patience.

Pictures, storyline, plot, and resolution: Every aspect blended and complimented each other quite nicely. However, the last line didn’t read like a finale to a story. I read it over multiple times, and it still felt off. I wanted the donkeys to say “I love you” back. Other than that, I found no issues with the laugh-out-loud book and highly recommend you to share it with your own trickster.

Amazon’s recommended reading age is 4-10 years.

Roofus the Rooster Shouted Cock-A-Doodle-Do All Day Long by JoAnn Hazeldene (Book Review)

Is Roofus’s love for crowing annoying to others?

Young children will enjoy and identify with Roofus the rooster. Roofus struggles with how others perceive him. He demonstrates emotional intelligence byidentifying and managing his own emotions as well as recognizing the emotions of others. This book encourages children to empathize with others and to compromise while maintaining a positive self-concept.

This easy-reader draws in the audience using repetition and language patterns, within a fun and interactive sing-song poem. The story introduces literary concepts such as plot, onomatopoeias, syntax, and prepositional phases. Children will not only interact with the print but actively participate in the story. The animal sounds are color coded for easy prereader participation. Parents and teachers will want to act out the story using movement and sounds.

Roofus the Rooster Shouted Cock-a-doodle-do All Day Long is a silly storybook encouraging viewer participation.

If you live on a farm or have visited one, you know that some animals are very vocal. Roosters, for instance, love to greet the day, but their cock-a-doodle-doos do not stop when the sun is at its highest point. Like in real life, the rooster in the story shouted hello at first light and several other points in the day.

First, the rooster woke the farmer, who told the bird, “Shhh!” Then, it moved to the fenced-in area where the rooster’s bellowing hello scared four horses. The rooster also startled several birds on a electrical line and annoyed a fluffy white cat. The rooster visited other animals, each having similar facial expressions to the loud cock-a doodle-doo. While the rooster didn’t think twice about his loud vocals, others did not appreciate his loud squawking.

Readers will see a reaction written in bold, colorful letters at each pitstop. These reactions will repeat, in order, at the next location. For example, when the farmer said, “Shhh,” the word was repeated on stop two under the new sound: “Bang clang, shhh.” The story structure promotes child involvement, prediction, and memorization. The simple, repetitive text makes this story perfect for beginning readers.

Roofus the Rooster Shouted Cock-a-doodle-do All Day Long is a wonderful book with humorous illustrations and predictable text. Parents and educators can use the book to teach toddlers their animal names or sounds. It can used as a starter book for young readers.

Adult readers might notice the drawings looked pixelated. Children six years and younger will not notice or care about the graininess. The text was crystal clear, though!

I recommend Roofus the Rooster Shouted Cock-a-doodle-do All Day Long to babies-first grade.

Three Little Pigs and The Good Wolf by Avery Smart (Book Review)

In this charming retelling of the classic tale, “The Three Little Pigs and The Good Wolf” the author weaves a delightful narrative filled with whimsy, humor, and unexpected twists. The three little pigs, each with their distinct personalities, set out to build their homes, unaware of the lurking danger posed by the big ‘bad’ wolf.

As the story unfolds, readers are treated to a heartwarming journey of friendship, resilience, and the realization that sometimes, appearances can be deceiving. The author infuses the narrative with valuable life lessons, emphasizing the importance of not judging others based on preconceived notions. The unexpected alliance between the pigs and the wolf adds a unique and refreshing twist to the familiar fable, making this book a captivating read.

The storytelling is complemented by vibrant illustrations that bring the characters and their world to life. The author’s vivid descriptions and engaging dialogue capture the imagination, making it an ideal bedtime or classroom read. Beyond the surface-level narrative, the book encourages readers to reflect on themes of empathy, kindness, and the potential for unlikely friendships. It’s a must-read for those seeking a fresh perspective on a beloved classic.

Most of us know the classic children’s story The Three Little Pigs. In it, the wolf intentionally blows down the piglets’ homes made of straw and sticks and attempts to knock down the brick house as well. The famous wolf is labeled a villain for good reason. Readers will be introduced to a more thoughtful animal in Three Little Pigs and The Good Wolf. Children will discover this wolf is a sweet, caring canine, not a scary beast.

This story contains some elements that the original fable possessed. Three pigs do go off to build their homes from the same materials found in the famed edition. A wolf goes to each home and asks to come inside. However, this wolf didn’t huff, puff, and knock down their homes with sinister intentions. He did not want to make them his late-night snack. Yes, he accidentally dismantled the straw and stick home. He tried to extinguish a fire, not cause the straw structure to fall. The stick home tumbled down, too, but again, the wolf didn’t have food on the brain. No, he had an important story and item to share!

The three little pigs judged the wolf by his outward appearance. They reacted based on old fairytales and didn’t think twice about giving the wolf the benefit of the doubt. They were filled with shame once they realized the error in their ways. This was not an angry, hungry beast wanting to satisfy his hunger; it was just a friendly animal trying to do the right thing. The wolf found something that didn’t belong to him and wanted to return it to its rightful owner: the three pigs’ grandma.

This story teaches valuable lessons. One, don’t judge a book by its cover. Second, friends come in all sizes, colors, and forms. Lastly, don’t be quick to dismiss someone. Listen and be kind.

The artwork was out of this world! I can’t rave enough about it. The artist did a masterful job updating the piggies’ look from the famed story we’ve grown accustomed to. I loved how expressive their faces became, especially when the wolf came knockin’, or the oinkers went a runnin’. The artist didn’t stop with the three little pigs; they painted many emotions on the wolf’s face, showing a softer and friendlier side of the famous, menacing, canine breed. While I loved the illustrator’s skill, the text sometimes became muddled. On occasion, the background overpowered the text in the foreground. Despite that, I highly recommend sharing this story with your family or class!

Amazon’s recommended reading age is baby-5 years. I would change that scale to 2-6 year olds.

It was supposed to be a fun day at the beach.

Have you been so engrossed in a book that you felt like living it? Could you picture the characters and the locations or even hear a foreign accent as dialogue is exchanged? Kris, the heroine, gave new meaning to being immersed in a good book! In the real world, she was a typical kid, complaining about not wanting to do something a parent, her dad, asked her to do. In this case, that would be attending a costume party in March. She understood dressing up for Halloween, but a costume party in March was stupid, according to her. Kris would rather get lost in a good book. Me too!

When Kris cracked open her current read, she found herself smack dab in the thick of things. She felt the breeze on her face, watched in amazement as dolphins played, and moved around the ship as easily as she did her bedroom in the real world. Kris’s biggest problem was the captain’s annoying son, James. That soon quickly changed when they went ashore, and they were given an unfriendly welcome by several stranded pirates who were ready to leave.

As Kris searched for food, her path crossed with several talking animals. Stevie, the sloth, spoke as slowly as he moved. Sam, the snake, stretched out every “s” and gave kisses. Kris met Michael, king of monkeys, who was always in the mood to play a game. Other animals were present on the island—some who aided Kris and one particular animal that was just plain mean, like those awful pirates.

Kris and The Pirates was two stories in one. In the pirate world, Kris seeks help from the multiple talking jungle animals she met while searching for food and a hiding spot! The real world was not as exciting as the island, but one encounter did cause her to scream in fright. How and why will only be unveiled if you read the book, and I highly recommend you read the book!

After I finished the story, I wondered if Kris’s time as a sailor was real or if it was just a person’s imagination gone wild. Whatever the answer is, I (again) recommend you read the book. Why? Because it’s that good! It has action, suspense, humor, and (let’s not forget) talking animals!
