Interview with Teesa Mee

Welcome, Teesa Mee❣

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Teesa) I am the oldest five children and the only girl. My last three brothers were born when I was 14, 16, and 17, so I became their built-in babysitter. I attended the University of Michigan in the pre-med program, but decided I was just not competitive enough to become a doctor. After a bad breakup, I failed to complete one class and forfeited my degree in Experimental Biology. However, I had a job waiting and did not return to college for 36 years. In the meantime, I married, adopted two children, worked in administrative and supervisory positions, and then lost my son to suicide when he was 24. The toll of the grief on my health was devastating. I lost my job in December 2009, and we soon lost our home and a vehicle to bankruptcy. (My husband has been totally disabled since 1999.) When Social Security granted me SSDI to deal with my health, I began to recover and returned to college. I graduated a year ago with a BS in Information Science, specializing in Web Development. However, along the way, I began editing for several independent authors and decided to pursue that instead of Web design. My business is called Indie Editing Services and you can find me on Facebook under that name and my website is www.indieeditingservices.com.

I began writing during my teenage years to deal with the angst I was feeling. I wrote poetry and song lyrics, and composed stories to tell my younger brothers.  When I overcame my grief over the loss of my son, I began a memoir on surviving suicide grief. I hope to publish that early next year. I have also participated in several anthologies, published those teen poems in a volume called Looking Back: Poems from the Adolescent Me, and just published my Thesaurus Erotica.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Teesa) Sometimes the words just flow. Other times, not so much. I have a novella on the back burner. I have written 5K of it, the beginning and the end. I’m stuck on the middle section and have decided to just let it sit, coming back to it now and again. I find that taking walks and reading other books often helps.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Teesa) I have a full-time job as the customer service manager for a start-up software company. The best part is I get to work from home. I also run Indie Editing Services, editing other authors’ books. I enjoy my two dogs and they demand my attention throughout the day. When I can, I spend time with my 11-year-old grandson. He is the joy of my life. Then there’s laundry, grocery shopping, vacuuming, and dusting.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Teesa) I have a pen name to protect my family of birth from my secret career. However, my close family members and friends know that I write and they are highly encouraging of me. Some of my best support comes from other authors I have met on social media.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Teesa) Thanks for limiting it to ten, or I could be here all day
and night.

  1. Edna Ferber, who wrote one of my all-time favorite books, Show Boat, which became America’s first musical!
  2. Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind.
  3. Andrew Greeley; I love his view of God as an adolescent girl in a huge crush with humanity.
  4. Stephen King, especially Salem’s Lot and The Stand.
  5. Anne McCaffery, all of her Dragonriders of Pern books and her Acorna books.
  6. JD Robb’s In Death Series. The relationship between Eve Dallas and Rourke is HAWT!
  7. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series
  8. Michael Connelly, especially his Harry Bosch books.
  9. Jane Austen, who doesn’t love her books and she has inspired so many more writers of Victorian romance.
  10. Mason Sabre, my good friend, who writes the most emotionally engaging paranormal stories I have ever read!

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Teesa) Ooh, that’s a toughie because many of my faves have been turned into movies. I guess I would go with JD Robb’s Naked in Death starring Scarlett Pomer as Eve Dallas and Tom Ellis as Roarke.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Teesa) It’s no secret at all. My current project is a memoir of surviving suicide grief called Who Am I Now? I’m also working on a novella about a family of serial killers and the cop who is hunting them. Then way back, I’m working on a full novel called Mementoes based on the song Lydia the Tattooed Lady.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Teesa) In order of publication, but not reading order, I have Looking Back, Poems from My Adolescent Self (Kindle Purchase Link)

Demon Depression (essay) and Sunshine (poem) in This Beautiful Escape Vol. 1

Don’t Give Up (essay) and Don’t Despair (poem) in
This Beautiful Escape Vol. 2

Two poems in
Warrior Women, Vanquishing with Passion and Path to the Light

Thesaurus Erotica, a reference book for authors of romance and erotica (Kindle Purchase Link); and finally A Samhein to Remember in Detours in Our Destination which will be published in August.

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Teesa) Fans can email me at teesamee61@gmail.com
You can find me on social media in all these places:

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Teesa) This has been a blast and I just want to give a shout out to all my fans and friends for supporting my dreams, especially Melissa Ann, Mason Sabre, Angela Peters, David S. Scott, Jennifer Cleary Roche, Kathy Ossian, Jan Jimenez, Carmen Meerschaert, my daughter Suzie and her partner Jess, and my hubs Gary, who has the patience of a saint. I love you, Babe!

Wow, Teesa Mee, you have gave me and our lovely visitors plenty of ideas of what to read next. Now the real questions is…. What shall we buy first? Decisions, decisions……..

Before you, my sweet guests, run off to Amazon please take a moment to say howdy to Teesa. Ask her a question. We’d love to hear your thoughts on her responses and the books discussed today.

Thanks,
Kam

Interview with Alice Ross

Welcome, Alice Ross!!

       1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Alice) Unlike the majority of authors, I’d never had a burning desire to write a book.  I used to work in the financial services industry, writing all kinds of scintillating (?) material about pensions and the like.  Fortunately, one day when nobody was looking, I managed to escape, and to make sure they didn’t drag me back, I moved to Spain.  We looked after a holiday rental property there and people kept leaving all kinds of books which I subsequently read.  Then it occurred to me one day that perhaps I could write a book too.  So I did.  I locked myself away for about six weeks and rattled off a 100,000 word Regency romance novel.  Not having a clue what I was doing, you had to pick me up off the floor when the first publisher I sent it to, replied saying they’d like to publish it in hardback.  That was nine years ago and I’ve since re-edited the book, removing (ah-hem) about twenty-thousand adverbs.  (But don’t tell anybody!)

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Alice)  In the early days I used to try and push myself through it, which was completely unproductive, made me very frustrated, and occasionally reduced me to tears (I KNOW!).  Now I’m much more relaxed about it and while I try and write every day, I accept that some days will be more productive than others.  I’ve also realized with experience that I’m much better writing first thing in the morning, and that if I try to do anything of a creative nature after lunch, I’m wasting my time.  So I just have a snooze instead J

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Alice)  It’s FAR from glitz and glamour.  It’s a very lonely and isolating profession, which is why I try to balance it by working in the “real world” for two days a week.  My job in the tourism industry basically involves chatting all day (tough work but someone has to do it), but it
provides a healthy contrast from writing.
I’m also a complete exercise junkie so I work out for at least an hour a day.  I also play the violin in an amateur orchestra – badly! But I try and practice regularly as – for some unfathomable reason – I have a burning desire to be good at it.

      4.  I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Alice)  I’ve had eight books published now and, apart from the first one, I haven’t really told many people about the others.  People are usually surprised – and, I have a say, a tad impressed – when you do tell them.  This year, though, I’ve decided to raise my profile by launching myself
into the world of social media.  It’s been a complete revelation!  But the really good thing is that I’m now in touch with other authors which makes me feel part of something and is making the whole writing experience so much more enjoyable.

      5.  Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Alice)  I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I don’t actually read a lot of fiction.  As a child I devoured all of Enid Blyton’s books – over and over again.  And then progressed into the world of Catherine Cookson.  But I then developed a passion for history and now love nothing more than getting stuck into a good book about some dead monarch, or some fifth-cousin-thrice-removed of some dead monarch.  I love David Starkey’s books and keep The Lives of the Kings & Queens of England by Antonia Fraser my bed at all time so I can dip in for a quick fix when required.  (But don’t tell anyone that either.)

      6.  If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Alice)  I’d love to see A Summer of Secrets on the screen.  It’s my favourite of all my books so
far.  I can just see Tom Hiddleston as Rich, Caroline Quentin as Jenny, and Maggie Smith as Phyllis.

Book 2 in the Countryside Dreams series

One long hot summer. Secrets never stay buried for long…

Portia is determined to restore Buttersley Manor, her family’s crumbling ancestral home, to its former glory. Yet she has a feeling that there are a few forgotten skeletons in the dust-covered cupboards.

Jenny has put her life on hold for far too long. It’s time to finally start living and to dig up those hopes and dreams she’s kept hidden all these years – but is she brave enough?
Rich is happily married with a beautiful wife and lovely daughter. In fact, his world is perfect until a very unexpected consequence of his past walks through the door…
Joe would like nothing more than to travel back in time to when he and Gina were happy. But is it too late to rescue what they once had?

One thing’s for sure, nothing’s ever quite what it seems when it comes to life in the country!

A perfect, feel-good summer read about love, life and family.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Alice)  Carina launched my Countryside Dreams series in April – Book One – An Autumn Affair, and Book Two – A Summer of Secrets – have already been published, so I’m now working on Book Three.  It’s set in the run-up to Christmas, which is something new for me as all of my other books have a summery feel to them.

Book 1 in the Countryside Dreams series

Autumn is coming. Anything could happen…

Julia is contemplating an affair with ex-boyfriend Max after a chance meeting in the cereal aisle of the supermarket…and finding that he’s just as gorgeous as ever.

Miranda has got it all: expensive clothes, a huge house and her enormously wealthy husband, Doug. So why does she feel as if something is missing?

Faye is fed up of being treated like a child – she’s a teenager, and knows what she wants! She’s determined to escape her sleepy life at Primrose Cottage…

Three women, each with two options, needing to make one choice. When it comes to affairs of the heart, nothing is ever simple!

A perfect, feel-good read about love, life and family.

Please note this book was previously published as A Country Affair in April 2015.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Alice)  Forty Things To Do Before You’re Forty is an introduction to the village of Buttersley, where my Countryside Dreams series is set.  An Autumn Affair is the first book in the series, and A Summer of Secrets the second. The books can easily be read independently of each other though.

The truth is that Annie Richards is just too busy to fall in love!

Running a successful cake-making business, acting as caretaker to grand country house, Buttersley, and not to mention single-handedly raising her five-year-old daughter is more than enough to keep Annie’s (flour-dusted) hands full! So can someone please remind her why she agreed to train for a marathon as a ‘40 things to do before you’re 40’ pact with her same so-called best friend?!

With every hour of day already taken up, the arrival of crime writer Jake O’Donnell at Buttersley shouldn’t really have any impact on Annie’s day-to-day life at all. There’s definitely no time in her carefully scheduled day for daydreaming about drop-dead gorgeous authors. Is there?

But between whipping up batches of her signature limoncello cupcakes, Annie realises that Jake, and his twinkling dark eyes, can’t just be ticked off her mental to-do list as easily as she though. Especially when it seems that no. 40 on her list could be creating a truly decadent wedding cake – for her very own wedding…

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

Author Showcase / Interview and Review of “Sinful Surrender” – Houston Havens

Welcome, Houston Havens!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(HoustonI’ve always been a writer at heart…but I feel I got my “real” start in the business when I had
an unexpected meeting with Acquisitions Editor Tracy Farrell at Harlequin. I wasn’t a Harlequin kind of writer, but I pitched her because a friend told me too. I was surprised when Mrs. Farrell asked for the first three chapters of my book. So, naturally I sent them. As expected, she sent me a rejection letter, but it’s what she said that gave me the “start” I needed, and made me the writer I am today.

Her words told me what I as an unpublished writer needed to know…it’s the day I became an AUTHOR in my mind, not just a writer. Mrs. Farrell’s letter said, “I will say that I never encourage any writer whom I don’t think has talent…keep writing.”

In my mind, this was my “start” as an author. I’ll forever be grateful to Mrs. Tracy Farrell. I will say, even after my first book – Sinful Surrender hit bestseller 6 days after it was released…I didn’t FEEL like an author until I held a print copy in my hands…

2.  Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Houston) I write through it, even when I know I’ll delete everything I wrote and go in another direction the next day…somewhere in what I write I find the crumb I need to see where the story needs to go. When that fails I talk it through with my friend Elaine and she suggests where she thinks I should be going…and
she’s usually right.  ;-D

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Houston) LOL…when I’m not writing I’m sleeping for those four or five hours, then I get back up and start work (writing).

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Houston) Everyone knows I write and what genre’s I write…all are very encouraging.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(Houston) OMG this is like thanking people at the Oscar awards and if you don’t say someone’s name or mention it at the top of your thank you list they get insulted – so I’m going to keep my favorite authors to myself. That said, I will tell you the last book I read and really enjoyed was by Kayelle Allen she’ll be releasing that book soon…and you’ll love it!

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love see casted in the parts?

(HoustonI would love to see my book Sinful Surrender Book one of the Psychic Menage Series on the big screen…because of the many worlds within the story, it would make an awesome film…many of my reviewers have said the same thing. It’s a very visual world I’ve created. Each book introduces the reader to
another one of the worlds.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Houston) Ok *leaning in to whisper* I’ve got a box set book coming out soon but because I had to leave the sex scenes out I’m not telling anyone that it’s a book that’s connected to my Psychic Menage series….it’s about the very beginning and how the world in the Psychic Menage series came to be. Once it’s out of the box set,
I’ll add the sex scenes and Promo it as such. *Leans back up for everyone else to hear*. I’m working on book five of the Psychic Menage series and a box set book. * {:-D *

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Houston) You can find them at Amazon, CreateSpace, and Goodreads

Print books can be bought at https://www.createspace.com/

The reading order of my Psychic Menage Series is:
Sinful
Surrender
Phantom
Desire
Exposed
Ecstasy
Intimate
Betrayal

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Houston)

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Houston) I’d tell those who haven’t read any of my books not to hesitate to give me a try. Don’t be put off by the genre(s) this series is listed under because this story can’t really fall under any true genre…I’ve had many reviewers who weren’t looking forward to reading this “scifi” series as there were those who didn’t want to read “another” menage…each of them were surprised by this series and glad they read my books, because I’ve done
something very different then what you’ll find in any of these genre…so, dare to give me a try.

Top psychic spy Fay Avalon saw too much on her latest mind traveling mission and is now on the run from her post-catastrophic dystopian government, searching for the truth and proof. She escapes but is shot down, landing in the arms of the enemy.

In Drakker and Arlo’s world, women are so rare the men have accepted a polyandrous lifestyle. When the brothers stumble upon Fay unconscious in the wreckage of an aircraft, they are immediately attracted to her. Arlo wants to keep her, but Drakker knows they can’t. They must take her to their brother Logan Abán, leader of their people.

Logan struggles with trusting anyone, even himself. When a beautiful, intelligent, and intriguing woman falls into their laps, his denied desires for intimacy challenge his need to trust the spy. He’s frustrated by romantic Arlo’s claims of her innocence. When pragmatic and dominating Drakker defends her as well, Logan refuses to trust his gut.

Can one woman satisfy the diverse desires of three men? Will Logan’s fears be realized by betrayal? Is Fay to be sentenced to death as a spy, suffer a fate worse than death by being returned to her government as a traitor, or will she find a new life and love as the wife of three sexy brothers?

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

First, I want to note you shouldn’t bypass the prologue because I think the terminology is most beneficial to the reader. Don’t fret if you can’t remember it all — consider it a cheat sheet and peek at it as often as you like. 🙂

Now onto my critique…..

Before Sinful Surrender, I admit, I never before heard of Houston Havens. Man, I was missing out on one fabulous, kinky, multi-layered author. I say multi-layered because she had the ability to bring the heat, in and off the battlefield. What I wouldn’t give for a designer to help bring certain aspects of SS to life. For me, this book was a combination of Terminator (robots – battles), Divergent/Insurgent (different class of people), and 50 Shades of Grey – if 50 Shades was about 1000 times kinkier. Maybe a million. Sorry E.L. James but, between you and HH, Houston wins the “Panty Pleasing” award. 😉

Now about that kinkery……

Fay had sex (made love) to the three men together, two at a time, and then one-on-one.

When it was just her and Drakker or her and Drakker/Logan, they were in a parallel reality. Basically, it’s a no-holds bar, anything goes arena. And folks, anything and everything happened there. Truth be told, Fay wasn’t the only one who needed to cool off. I was feeling rather hot and bothered, too.

I must note I did have one issue with the parallel reality scenes. I didn’t mind what they did there. No, that was hot as hell. However, I had issue with her use of the word “boobies” — in each heated encounter. For me, when you are using X-rated word choices such as cock and pussy, boobies seems like an adolescent word choice. IMHO, breasts would’ve made a better choice.

Speaking of breasts…..

Arlo, Logan, and Drakker really stepped up their game when Fay was ashamed/sickened by her scars. They proved to her it’s not what’s on the outside that matters, it’s a person’s heart – their character – their courage that define them. Fay, she was the ultimate heroine. A most memorable character!

Heart Rating System – 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest)
Score: ❤❤❤❤

BOOK TWO

Mind traveler Chandra Lamar is on the run, not only from her post-catastrophic dystopian government but from a past she can’t remember. Both push her to remember the past because it threatens what she wants in the now; the Nodin men.

Interview with Allen Long (Less Than Human)

Welcome, Allen Long!!

1.  For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(Allen) I began telling stories almost as soon as I discovered them.  In sixth grade, my teacher let me write a short story a week instead of doing the regular English assignments.  I attended a six-week writer’s workshop at Michigan State between high school and college.  I took all of the creative writing courses offered in college.  I earned a BA in journalism, an MA in fiction writing, and an MFA in fiction writing.  After that, I began publishing short stories and memoirs in literary magazines.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(Allen) Knock on wood, but I’m pleased to say I’ve never had writer’s block.  However, the hardest thing for me is to get a new short story off the ground.  In the last year or so, I’ve written the first seven pages of three short stories.  Eventually, I’ll either lose interest in the story or I’ll get a new insight that spurs me on.  If I’m having
trouble with a short story, I stop and write a memoir, which seems to be my natural form.  If you read the author
comments at the back of the O. Henry Prize Stories, you’ll see that many authors started their award-winning stories and then got stuck.  Sometimes years later, they’ve had a flash of insight that allowed them to finish their stories.  So if a writer gets stuck on a short story, it may be that the story needs more time to marinate before it can be written.  By the way, I read the O. Henry Prize Stories every year because I believe reading quality fiction helps a writer produce the same.

3.     Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(Allen) I read, go to the movies, swim, walk my dogs, hang out with my wife and friends, and stay in touch with my grown children.  I’m also an assistant editor at Narrative Magazine, so I read and evaluate submissions.

4.     I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(Allen) I have a close circle of friends and relatives who know I write.  They are proud of me and excited when I publish.  Otherwise, I keep my writing a secret.

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

Ray Bradbury
Raymond Carver
Anthony Doerr
William Faulkner
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Tessa Hadley
Ernest Hemingway
Alice Munro
Richard Russo
William Trevor

6.     If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(Allen) I don’t think I can answer this one.  I never think about how books might be turned into movies.  I’d be thrilled if my book were turned into a movie; however, I’d want the casting experts to work their magic.

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(Allen) I’m writing memoirs and short stories for literary magazines.  Maybe some of this activity will lead to
another book.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(Allen) Here are some memoirs and short stories that can be found online.  The pieces are not connected and
can be read in any order.  These pieces do not appear in my book.

“Sleepover” in Ray’s Road Review (memoir)
“Freak Out” in Verdad (memoir)
“The Poincare Conjecture” in 42opus (fiction)
“Common Ground” in Amarillo Bay (fiction)

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(Allen) My email address is allenlongauthor@gmail.com

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(Allen) Readers may be curious about the alligator on the cover of Less than Human: A Memoir.  This image was inspired by an incident in which our negligent parents encouraged my brother and me, when we were in elementary school, to swim in a Florida lake inhabited by an adult alligator while they visited inside with our grandparents.

Readers who are writers may be curious about my process for writing this book.  I took 3.5 years to write the first eight chapters of the book.  Then I hired a professional editor, and I took another 1.5 years to write the ninth and final chapter and complete five more cover-to-cover drafts of the book.  My publisher accepted the book as is, so I highly recommend working with a professional editor and doing lots of revising and polishing.

And one final piece of advice to aspiring writers: whatever you are writing, get the story off the ground immediately.  I reject so many submissions at Narrative Magazine because the writer “warms up” for seven pages, and then the real story begins on page 8.  This is one of the primary reasons I reject stories.

(KAMERON) Ladies and Gents, I hope you enjoyed my interview with Allen Long. If you have any questions or
comments for Allen, by all means, leave him a message below. Thank you in
advance for your visit!

In Less than Human, Allen Long tells the story of his often nightmarish childhood in the wealthy suburbs of D.C., the wonders and mysteries of teenage love, his ill-advised journeys into corporate America and a hellish marriage, and ultimate breakdown. And yet, his story is mostly one of triumph. He draws strength from the joys of fatherhood, he finds true love in his second marriage, and through working with psychotherapists and leading a life rich in self-examination, he overcomes both child abuse and the resulting PTSD, finally learning that instead of being less than… he is, indeed… human. Less than Human follows an unconventional path, arranged as much by theme and association as by chronology. These stories take many forms, from driving narrative to lyrical reverie, at times evoking mythic overtones, and this variety, along with an unflinching confrontation with the conditions and consequences of childhood abuse, creates its own form of suspense-in what direction will this book take us next?

Author Showcase / Interview and Review of “Fava” – John Hazen

Welcome, John Hazen!!

1. For those who might not be familiar with you, would you be a dear and tell the readers a little about yourself? How did you get your start in the writing business?

(John) Writing a novel had always been one of those things I always wanted to do but never got around to do. I’d always had these ideas floating around in my head that I thought would make great premises (e.g., what would happen if a person stumbled upon one of the 30 pieces of silver given to Judas? Or, how can you compare two diametrically opposed wars like the Civil War and Vietnam? Or, what would happen if one of the “Pillars of Islam” were removed?), but I never acted and used one of these as the basis for a novel. It was about fifteen years ago that I got my first laptop and I decided it was time to put my downtime on the train back and forth to work to profitable use. I started to write. Over that time I’ve completed and published three suspense novels: Dear Dad, Fava and Journey of an American Son. I’ve just submitted my fourth novel, Aceldama, for publication.

2. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, please share how you handle it.

(John) I’ve encountered some level of block on each of my novels. I’m not an outliner. I’m more of a “make it up as I go along type of guy.” While I think this approach is right for me and has some advantages such as spontaneity, it also lends itself to going down a path, getting to a certain point and then saying to myself: Where do I go from here? The way I usually handle it is to put the book aside and work on some other project. The blocks eventually resolve themselves. For one of my books, I even had a proverbial 2:00 AM “Aha moment” when I woke up with an idea on how to move forward. Luckily, I had pen and paper by my bedside to jot down the idea so that it didn’t flee my brain come morning.

3. Contrary to what some people envision about a romance writer’s life, it’s not all glitz and glam. Well not for the majority of us. With that bubble sadly busted, when you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

(John) Well, I do have a day job in the field of environmental protection to pay the bills, but people don’t want to hear about that, I’m sure. In general, I like doing things with my best friend, my wife Lynn. We love to travel. Paris has been like a second home to us over the years. We also like to play tennis, go for walks and watch TV together. Whatever I do, I’m always on the lookout for new book ideas, I’m afraid.

4. I know many writers, such as myself, keep their pastime/career a secret. Do those close to you know you write? If so, what are their thoughts?

(John) When I first started writing, I did keep it to myself but since I’ve gotten a few books under my belt, I let anyone and everyone know about my writing. Working with a small, independent publisher, I’ve had to do a lot of my own marketing and promotion. With all the Twitter and Facebook self-promotion I do, I’m often surprised if someone doesn’t know that I’m an author. The reactions I’ve gotten range from surprise to pride, but they’ve always been positive.

(Kameron) Congrats!!

5. Will you share with us your all-time favorite authors? If you’re like me, it’s a long list so give us your top ten.

(John) My absolute all-time favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I was chagrined that Go Set a Watchman was released, but I don’t hold it against her, instead chalking that up to a greedy publisher brow beating a nearly 90-year old woman into releasing it.
Other favorite authors, not necessarily in this order, include:
J.K. Rowling
John Steinbeck
Stephen King
James Michener
Leon Uris
Doris Kearns Goodwin
Laura Hillenbrand
James Patterson
John Hazen

(Kameron) Great list of authors. I love you included yourself. We should always be our greatest champion/supporter.

6. If you could choose one book to go to the big screen, yours or otherwise, which book would you choose and whom would you love to see cast in the parts?

(John) I’ve been told by more than one person that they thought my book Fava would make a great movie. One recent review noted that she loves it when a book makes her go “ Wow, I didn’t see that coming!” That’s what I like in a film as well. It’s also topical and current, has great action and believable characters. I’d go with Eva Longoria for the lead, Francine Vega, Bradley Cooper for FBI Special Agent Will Allen and Johnny Depp for the brilliant but off-the-wall Alan Westbrook. Might as well shoot for the stars, right?

(Kameron) That’s a superb cast!!

7. Would you care to tell us what you’re working on now? That is if it’s not top-secret information. If so, just whisper it in my ear. I swear it’ll go no further.

(John) Well, as I mentioned earlier I just sent my latest novel, Aceldama, to my publisher with the hope of having it released in the spring. It’s a fantasy/suspense novel with a religious overtone that involves a coin, a curse and a murder. Getting it into publishable shape has been consuming my time of late, although I am also helping a friend write a screenplay of a book he has rights to.

8. Where can we find your stories, and is there a particular reading order?

(John) My books can all be found on Amazon, and no, they are all stand-alone novels and do not need to be read in any given order. The links for the books are:

9. Would you please share how your present and future fans can contact you?

(John) Probably the best way to contact me is via Twitter @john_hazen. I’m very diligent about keeping up with my notifications and messages so if you reach out to me, I will get back shortly.

10. Before we conclude this enlightening interview, do you have anything else you’d like to share? The stage is all yours.

(John) I just want to thank you for this opportunity. As I said, independent authors have to spend a lot of their own time promoting and marketing. The idealistic and unrealistic side of me says that this is not needed. “My books are good and they should sell themselves,” I tell myself, but alas, it doesn’t seem to work out that way. It’s therefore especially appreciated when I come across outlets like your blog to get my name and my works out there. I hope I’m able to pique the interest of at least a few possible readers who’ll look me up and give my stories a chance.

(Kameron) Thank you John gracing us with an interview and thank you ladies and gents for poppin by. Before you run off to the real world (again), let’s take a quick gander at one of the books John mentioned above, Fava.
Enjoy!!

The biggest story of Francine Vega’s career could end her life…or start World War III. Francine is a rising TV news reporter in New York City. Despite her brains, beauty and a growing following, she is stuck covering local interest stories. That is until her career literally hits the jackpot when the winner of a $450 million dollar lottery tells Francine that he is committed to using his new fortune to avenge his brother’s killing at the Pentagon on 9/11. His seemingly crazy plan is backed by more than just money-he is in league with a ruthless and powerful Army Colonel gone rogue, religious extremists and co-conspirators in the highest levels of government. Francine teams with FBI Special Agent Will Allen, one of the few people who believe the threat is real, in a desperate race across three continents to stop the plot before it’s too late.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

As I was reading the first several chapters of Fava, I kept thinking it was coming across as a hate book. Alan Westbrook, Reverend Malcolm McKenzie, Colonel Lawson and their followers set out to eradicate Mecca for their own personal reasons. They were condemning/punishing an entire country/race/religion based off the horrendous actions of the few.

Reverend McKenzie’s motto “No Cheeks Left” went viral and his “sheep” began taking matters into their own hands while Alan and Lawson used Alan’s lotto earnings to plan their own vengeance. This is where the plot unfolds and the TRUER MESSAGE is unveiled and I realized this WAS NOT a hate book after all. Thank goodness for that!!

I believe the point of  Fava is NOT to spread hate but to reinforce the idea of not punishing the whole for the actions of the few.

I think you can agree/hope innocent people SHOULD NOT be sentenced to the same fate as the guilty parties.

Think about this….. If we laid down the hammer on an entire nation/race/religion based off the actions of a group of people then imagine how many people would be left walking the Earth.

Not many, I tell you that.

Ponder that a moment and then read this book.
