Hope to Die by James Patterson (Book Review)

Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career. Cross’s family—his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children—have been ripped away. Terrified and desperate, Cross must give this mad man what he wants if he has any chance of saving the most important people in his life. The stakes have never been higher: What will Cross sacrifice to save the ones he loves?

For the past few installments in the Alex Cross series, I felt as if JP was just phoning it in. They were just blah. However with this one, JP totally knocked my socks off. There was so much intrigue, suspense, and Sunday was a psycho I won’t soon forget. The way he held the Cross’ family hostage and kept them immobilized was pure freaking genius.

Man, JP really put a lot of thought in it and, as a fan, I appreciate his creativity. This book reminded me why I fell in love with Alex Cross and why I stuck with JP when his storylines were faltering.

And on a final note, don’t mess with Nana. 🙂 Read the book and find out why.

Deadly Obsession by Maggie Shayne (Book Review)

Rachel de Luca has a bad feeling about the new woman in Detective Mason Brown’s life, the nurse taking care of him after he’s injured in the line of duty. She’d like to think it’s just jealousy, but intuition tells her it’s something more, maybe something dangerous.

Mason knows Rachel’s wary of commitment, and asking her to stay when he’s in this condition would be the worst thing for their relationship. Then they receive chilling news that drives everything else from their minds.

Mason’s psychotic sister-in-law has escaped from custody, putting her sons—the nephews he’s raising—in the crosshairs. When his house is burned to the ground, he and Rachel are relieved that there are no bodies in the smoldering rubble, but now his nephews are missing and the clock is ticking.

As Mason and Rachel try to find the boys, she senses a new and unexpected danger stalking them. Soon, everyone close to Mason is in deadly peril—Rachel more than anyone….

Mason and Rach are back and trouble is once again beating down their door. In this installment, they are dealing with a wacko nurse who does anything to get the man she wants. Yeah, a psycho with a fascination with fire and cooking her “obstacles”. Unfortunately for Mason, Gretchen (the loon) sets her sights on him after he saves two children from the fire she set. She sees him as her one true love and in her twisted mind the only thing keeping them apart is his nephews and Rachel.

However, Gretchen didn’t count on Marie (Mason’s sister in-law and fellow wack job) from foiling her plans.

Seriously, who better to take down a woman with crazy eyes than one with the same nuttiness.

I will say, even though Marie did some horrendous crimes in the past, she proved a mother’s love can be a powerful thing.

A sane mother protecting her family from a psychotic killer —- > good read.
A psychotic mother/killer vs another psychotic killer –> UNFORGETTABLE READ!!

Keep Me Safe by Maya Banks (Book Review)

When Caleb Devereaux’s younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot. While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie’s vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will do risk everything to protect her— including his heart. . .

Before I read this story, I thought it would be kind of groovy to be psychic. Now, I have absolutely no desire to possess that “talent”. Let me tell you why….

1.) Rami uses her gift to help police/families find their missing loved ones. The downfall to her assistance comes with a steep price though. As she touches an object, she literally experiences everything the victim endures – every traumatizing moment. Even their deaths. (PASS)

2.) Tori, Caleb’s sister, also possesses psychic abilities. Her dreams (nightmares) foretell the future but with her gift, she can’t decipher when instances will occur. She can’t trust if her visions are just dreams or predictions of the future. As you can imagine, that would drive anyone batty. (PASS AGAIN)

3.) Our last psychic in the story belongs to the whackadoodle. He can create a psychic link to an individual and control their actions. Yeah, who wants a serial killer with that much power. Can I get a HELL NO!!!!! They are already scary enough. (I have no interest in controlling anyone. “With great power comes great responsibility.” Yeah, I just quoted Spiderman.)

No Limits by Lori Foster (Book Review)

A surprise inheritance reunites a mixed martial arts fighter with the woman he’s never forgotten in the first in a smoldering new series!

Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He’s also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she’s older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.

Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather’s legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette’s scars really go, and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he’ll break all the rules to do it…

I’m so thrilled Lori created this spin-off series centered around the rec center/fighters.

As with the Fighter series, there is plenty of action – yet the in ring action is not the primary focus of this series.

Cannon, the doll that he is, is still the ever loving “Saint”. He helps out anyone in need and the person who needs him the most is Yvette. In and out of the bedroom!

I adored their love story and was surprised who was the true villain. It was a curveball but I like curveballs. Don’t you?

And for the supporting cast featured in the story – aka the fighters/trainers at the center – I can’t wait to read their tales.

Next up? I’m thinking/hoping for Armie and Rissy. But then again, I’ll be happy with Denver/Cherry or whomever Lori pairs with Vanity. Really, I’m not picky. I simply want MORE!!!!!

Review of “Hidden Prey” – Cheyenne McCray

HIDDEN PREY
New York Times best selling author Cheyenne McCray returns to steamy romantic suspense with a high-octane thriller about a woman running from a Mexican cartel and the man determined to protect her.

Danger
Tori Cox, a talented and sought after musician, heads back to her roots in a small southwest town in Arizona as she flees an abusive relationship. When she arrives in Bisbee, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time—and witnesses the execution of a Federal agent by none other than the son of El Demonio, the head of the Jimenez Cartel. Tori and everyone she loves is now in danger as the cartel comes after her before she can testify.

Desire
Landon Walker, a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, rescues Tori when he sees the beautiful woman running from members of one of the most ruthless cartels in the world. He sets out to protect her, but soon protecting her isn’t enough. The fire between them makes him want her in a way that he’s never wanted another woman, despite his wounded heart.

Death
Diego Montego Jimenez will do everything in his power to kill the young American woman who threatens his business and family. No one lives to testify against the Jimenez Cartel. Landon isn’t about to let the cartel get hold of Tori. He’ll go to the ends of the earth and back to protect her—and show her he’s never letting her go.

Quick Thoughts

Cheyenne is back with a new series and I rather enjoyed it. IMO, it would make a perfect story arc for an episode of Breaking Bad, which I am currently engrossed in. Yeah, I know I’m way behind on the times with this show but I’m watching it now so …… 🙂

And now back to the book…..

If you like sexy cops, women who aren’t weak, and action, then you will enjoy this book. It is the perfect start to her new series. Can’t wait for book 2.
