Ivy’s Dinosaur Tea Party by Carrie A. Buck (Book Review)

Ivy is very excited! Today her dinosaur friends will be coming over for tea. She has lots to do from setting the table with teacups and plates, to preparing delicious scones and pastries. When Susan Stegosaurus, Tina T-rex and Tammie Triceratops all arrive, they roar in delight as they greet each other. But they soon run into some unforeseen obstacles. Tina T-rex is unable to reach the pastries with her tiny arms, the others don’t have hands to hold the teacups, and each feels self-conscious about themselves in some way, whether it’s a squeaky voice, slow moving feet, or the eyeglasses they wear. With kindness and compassion, the friends reassure each other that they are special in their own way. The tea party is a huge success!

Kids love dinosaurs. They also love tea parties. Put them together, and you get— one sensational, rhyming children’s book!

Ivy’s Dinosaur Tea Party begins with Ivy waking up in a fabulous mood. Today, all her dinosaur friends are coming over for a tea party! Readers get a first glimpse at the party’s invitees as Ivy prepares the yummy cookies and pies. Tina T-rex, Susan Stegosaurus, and Tammie Triceratops looked very adorable! I loved the artist’s choice of color combinations for the three dinos. I also liked that the artist gave Susan glasses. Very cute! Tina looked stylish in her exercise accessories: a headband and matching wristbands! So retro!

When the dinos arrived at Ivy’s house, they all flashed smiles; however, smiles quickly turned to frowns because Ivy didn’t anticipate the dinos’ dilemmas that would arise. How could T-rex reach for the food with their little arms? How could Tammie pick up the teacup when she had no hands to hold it? Readers won’t witness Susan having trouble drinking or eating; instead, the stegosaurus problem surfaces during the dance portion of the party. As Ivy addresses Susan’s sadness over their slipping glasses, the other dinosaurs mention the hardships they face. Being a good friend and kind person, Ivy reassures her chums that they are all perfect just the way they are. And when Ivy mentions she’s extremely shy and is often afraid to speak higher than a whisper, Tina is right by her side, parroting the words Ivy said to them moments ago.

Insecurities can grow in children and adults. They can affect our daily lives and dampen our spirits. So when you are feeling blue, please remember the writer’s beautiful message and smile: we are all special in our own way.

My recommended reading age is one to seven years.

Meet the Author

I’m a later in life author that took inspiration from my granddaughter to write my first book. It’s something I always dreamed of doing, but thought I’d write an adult novel. After a few unsuccessful attempts I found my true calling with children’s picture book.

Astro-pigs 1,2,3! by Michael Lawrence (Book Review)

Three bored pigs dream big when they look to the night sky! How far can these Astro-pig’s imaginations take them?
Astro-pigs 1,2,3! is an adventure story exploring the value of imagination and dreaming big. Bright colorful illustrations and a rhyming text take children along on an adventure to the moon, and back.

Parents can relate to kids complaining that they are bored and wishing for something fun to do. The three bored (not so little) pigs featured in this brightly colored story lay in a patch of mud, wishing they were Astro-pigs. With thoughts of space travel in their heads, they slept, dreaming about out-of-this-world adventures. And, when the piggies opened their eyes, they were suited up and ready to blast off.

Like in real life, young readers will count from 10 to 1 as the rocket’s inhabitants prepare for departure. The audience will see the three oinkers tethered outside the rocket as they float about in space. Encourage your children or class to jump and bounce as if they are on the moon with the space pigs. Continue the imaginative pretend play as you drive a lunar rover over the rocky terrain of the moon.

Astro-pigs 1,2,3! is an interactive, fun-filled storybook that encourages pretend play. Its rhyming words would be ideal for beginning readers. Out of every rhyming pair, I found one page where the rhyming word choice missed the mark: farm and warm. They are spelled nearly the same, but their end sounds do not rhyme. Unfortunately, I had to ding the book’s score for the rhyming error.

Families and classrooms will love watching the three pigs suit up and explore space. This cute story encourages participation using numbers on more than one occasion. Whether your child knows only numbers 1, 2, and 3 or 1 through 10, they’ll love becoming a part of the adventure.

I recommend sharing this Astro-pigs 1,2,3! with your family or classroom. The bold, colorful images should capture your baby’s eye. Toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary students will also love the illustrations. It would also make a phenomenal choice in reading material for beginning and advanced readers.

My eyes were instantly drawn to the cover. I loved the cute, comical snapshot of the family and baboon taped against the bright blue backdrop. It was perfect, and so was the title. I couldn’t wait to dive into the story; kids will be excited to read it, too.

Kids are always begging their parents for a family pet. Many go the traditional route: dog and cat. Then, we have children who prefer a pet who’s a smaller size or less vocal: fish, gecko, gerbil, hamster, guinea pig, and turtle. Of course, we must remember the daring children who ask for a pet snake, mouse, rat, hedgehog, or spider. There are more pets to choose from, but this is the first time I’ve heard of anyone who’d prefer a baboon as their companion.

Max Hardison’s illustrations were cute as a button and made me smile. Their cartoon image outshined any real baboon I’ve seen at our zoo or on a nature show. The artist made the wild animal appear cuddly-worthy, whereas the real-life version is frightening. The baboon’s facial expression at the beauty parlor spoke a thousand words. They might not like their “hoighty-toighty hairdo,” but kids will like the drawing. Children might wish for a baboon to join their next tea party after reading the book. Whether the baboon was behind the wheel, playing the bassoon, partaking in a 5-course meal, or looking at the night sky from a hot air balloon basket, the two sisters made having a baboon for a pet a fun and great idea.

This story captures the beauty of a child’s imagination. This book is perfect for 2–7-year-olds despite a few challenging words.

School or home, this is a lively book that will get kids excited for story time! Get your copy today, and remember to ask your child their thoughts on the out-of-the-ordinary pet.
