Grey by E L James (Book Review)

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Seeing the events unfold through Christian’s eyes was enlightening. E L James showed us his softer side, his vulnerability. He seemed almost child-like at times; needing validation of his worth. In “Grey”, I found Christian more likable.

There were several passages revisited (which I knew was to be expected): the contact, bar and a few emails. I actually skipped over several pages because I knew what was going to be said/happen and saw them as pointless to peruse again.

I must say one thing, as I’ve said in the past regarding the movie to my friends/followers, this book backs up my claim THERE ARE discrepancies between the book and movie. That’s why I usually DON’T read a book and watch the cinematic version or vice versa. I will nitpick, as would any true fan.

Heart of Darkness by Lauren Dane (Book Review)

Website
Amazon (Paperback Version)
Meriel Owen, next in line to control the largest organization of witches in the country, is asked to investigate the owner of a notorious club reportedly siphoning magic from the font of the Clan. It’s a direct violation of the Clan Code of Conduct, but one look at Dominic Bright and Meriel’s willing to make a deal. One taste of the sexually feral outlaw witch, and she’s eager to go further: he’s her bond mate, a legal conduit into the world of Clan witches and their magic.
Playing by the rules isn’t Dominic’s style, but bonding with Meriel—night after explosive night—is. However, Meriel has unwittingly invited someone else into her world: Dominic’s mother, a dangerous and poisonously influential magic addict whose lust for death and power corrupts all she touches. Now her shadow is closing in on Meriel, her Clan, and the man Meriel loves, and it’s casting them all into the inescapable heart of darkness.

After hearing about Lauren’s tale-weaving skills for some time now, I decided to give the author’s creations a look. I selected the Bound By Magick series because I’m a fan of paranormal romance novels. This story certainly didn’t lack in the romance department. Meriel and Dominic couldn’t keep their hands off one another. But besides their physical attraction, they connected mentally and magically, too, which made them a perfect match.

My only complaint about the story – at times, I felt like certain sections were rushed. For example, the showdown with Dom’s mom. I expected a surprise or two thrown at us, but it never happened. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t written poorly at all. I was simply waiting for the “Holy Hell” moment.

With that said, I will check out the rest of the series.

Wicked All the Way by Shayla Black (Book Review)

Retired military colonel Caleb Edgington has spent two long years trying to achieve the most important mission objective of his life—but not behind enemy lines. He’s trying to capture a woman with a broken heart. Having lost at love once, he understands being gun shy. The residual fears from Carlotta Buckley’s nasty divorce have stood between them, but he’s done with that. And he’s got the perfect strategy to lure her in…

Carlotta never thought she’d fall in love again. Once bitten, she’s now more than twice shy. And Caleb is everything she can’t handle—fierce, relentless, uncompromising…sexual. She’s managed to mostly avoid him, but now his son and her daughter need their help. Can Caleb and the spirit of the season convince her that she’s ready to take a chance on love again?

Outside of paranormal romances, I haven’t read or seen many erotic stories centered around people over the age of 50. I’m sure they are out there, but I’m simply not aware of any.

In the 100+ pages, Shayla did a marvelous job of bringing Caleb and Lotta’s love to life. She showed passion doesn’t stop at 20-40 and it shouldn’t.

The only section I wasn’t quite “feeling” was the usage of Hunter’s dungeon. For me, it was like “doing it” in your kid’s bedroom. I’ll pass!

Besides that one snafu, I liked the story very much.
