I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reedsy Discovery. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

I Did Not Know That explores feelings or social interactions children will experience at some point but may not understand how to handle them. Or, they’ve mishandled situations and need guidance on better handling them. For instance, in the first chapter, Sofia comes face to face with a deer on a walking trail. She very frankly tells the deer they are in her way. Like all the other animals in the story, the deer speaks to her. This wild animal kept a cool head and said, “You don’t always have to remove things that are in your way. Did you know that sometimes you can walk around them?” Sofia claimed she didn’t know that. Young kids might not know that either. They might ask a person to move in a not-so-pleasant tone.

As Sofia continues her journey, she meets more animals who give her sound advice and food for thought. Sofia and readers will learn why bullfrogs croak so loudly. They will learn from a bushy-tail squirrel that it’s okay to cry. Accidents will happen; don’t lose your temper when they do. Losing your temper hurts another person’s feelings and solves nothing. It typically escalates a bad situation. Instead, choose forgiveness. It has a better effect than angry words and actions.

Sofia returns to the forest over the years, meeting new friends and learning valuable life lessons. One day, a small brown horse notices Sofia doesn’t look happy kicking her soccer ball around. They asked her what’s wrong. Sofia is mad at herself for missing a ball, causing her team to lose the game. Society puts too much pressure on people, especially kids, to win. Peyton, the horse, tells Sofia she is good enough just the way she is. Parents, coaches, and educators should always encourage kids to enjoy life and not make themselves miserable, striving for perfection. Remind them it’s not important if you win or lose but how you play the game!

Sofia meets one more animal before we flash forward a few years to see Sofia return to the forest as an adult. Her first meet-up was with a big, black spider. I bet kids will have strong views on whether they’d stop to speak to the arachnid. For me, the answer is a hard NO. But I’m glad Sofia was braver than me because she had an insightful talk with Caroline about feeling jealous of her best friend. You’ll have to grab the book to hear Caroline’s helpful advice and Sofia’s wise words for the two bickering crows.

Life moves too quickly and so does this book. I wish it had another nine chapters. Why? Because I see children welcoming, absorbing, and then using the advice from the animals and arachnid more readily than if an adult sat them down and said what they should have done after the fact.

After Sofia meets one more forest animal (name withheld on purpose), kids learn to draw Ethan, the squirrel, by following 10 simple moves. The end credits also feature multiple discussion questions. A few ask readers to recall what they read or flip back and look for an object.

I Did Not Know That guides children through simple dialogue on handling many emotions/feelings. The sketches were cute too, even the (gulp) spider. The only thing this book needed was names for all the animals. Sofia asked a few, but not all. Why? Besides that one small detail, this story was fantastic and worth four stars.

I recommend sharing this quick read with preschoolers and elementary school children. Let’s raise children to be kind, treat others with respect, love themselves, be happy with who they are, and realize that it’s okay not to be okay.

(review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)

Kissed by Death by Nina Queen far exceeded my expectations, and the bar was set pretty high after reading By a Thread (book one) and Web of Lies (book 2).

Kissed by Death had suspense, explosions, life and death missions, mic drop moments, pain and torture, and betrayal. Finally, over a long wait, we had Alex and Darken locking lips and other body parts. 😀

These two, in joined or separate scenes, always kept me on the edge of my seat. When Darken made a person wet themself, I laughed because I knew it would happen. I love being right. (Name withheld to avoid spoilers). During the Master’s hissy fit, I could practically see the spit flying out of his mouth and Alex’s shit-eating grin.

Every bit of this story was spectacular, and I can’t wait to read Josepha’s story; the summary is located in “What’s Next.”

Final note: I love Alex’s spider senses and her ability to run 30 miles without breaking a sweat.

A beam of moonlight broke through the drifting clouds, reflecting from solid black eyes not five feet from him.

Darken’s hand jerked toward his sword, pulling it halfway out of its scabbard before he realized it was Alex.

Mother’s mercy and Jester’s grace! And the Blind Child’s cursed eyes in the dark! If the moon hadn’t chosen to blink through the cloud cover at that moment, he might never have known she was there.

Alex let out a soft, silvery laugh as she stepped from the shadows between the trees, her pale face and blond braid seemingly floating bodiless in the darkness around her.

“Jumpy, aren’t we? Expecting an attack, Forfeit?”

The wind carried over her scent, a floral note of jasmine from the perfume she’d worn this afternoon mixed with a hint of feminine sweat from the run, and something so specifically Alex—both sweet and sharp and slightly musky—it unleashed a stream of lava into his blood, burning through his veins and setting his loins on fire. Need almost swept him off his feet.

Darken clenched his jaw and curled his hands into fists. They were on a mission, for heaven’s sake!

Moving with iron control, Darken sheathed his sword and forced himself to relax back against the wall of the shelter, crossing one foot over the other.

“Actually, I was getting worried about you. What took you so long? I thought you might have gotten lost.”

A sharp smile parted Alex’s lips like the flash of a knife’s blade. She rocked forward on her toes. “Lies! I’m almost half an hour before our scheduled meeting time.”

Darken lifted a surprised eyebrow. “How do you know?”

“Shaper, remember?” She tapped her temple with one finger. “We have an extremely good sense of time, like an internal clock, especially with the help of the sun and moon. Speaking of which”—she nodded up at the sky which was a ragged puzzle of clouds and blinking stars—“we only have a few short hours until dawn. If I want to be back at the Canterbury Estate before sunrise, we should get moving.”

Darken cocked his head to the side. “You seem quite eager for someone who just ran over thirty miles.”

“Oh, that! Phst!” Alex waved a hand. “Not worth mentioning. Please, don’t make any concessions on my behalf, I’m all good to go. Unless, of course, you need some more time to rest your royal footsies from your journey?”

A honey pie would have wilted in comparison to the sweetness in her voice.

Darken locked his teeth and performed a slightly stiff bow. “I’ve only been waiting for you, milady.”

Web of Lies was overflowing with lies, deception, fight scenes, and mystery. There were many heated glances, jealousy moments, but no actual love connection between Alex and Darken. Too bad, I was hoping they’d discuss their night together, maybe have a repeat affair.

Like with book one, By a Thread, this story ended with a cliffhanger. I am dying to know who’s the traitor. I mean, I think I know, but I want confirmation. I can’t wait for book 3, Kissed by Death.

The title holds much promise that Alex and Darken will finally put their pride aside and hash things out, romance wise.

By a Thread: Trueborn Heirs Series, Book 1 by Nyna Queen (Book Review)

“I’m a spider, sugar. My shaper kind doesn’t bear that name for nothing.”

That’s not something Alexis Harper dares to say very often. If she did, it might just get her killed. Not that she is an easy mark, but even fools get lucky once in a while.

In a world where the magically gifted trueborn rule and the magicless halfborn slog away in the slums, half-blood mongrels like Alex are outcasts—feared and shunned. For most of her life, she has lurked in the shadows, trying to keep her true nature a secret. But the secrecy ends abruptly when she saves two trueborn aristo children from a group of hired killers.

Accused of a crime she didn’t commit, Alex suddenly finds herself running from powerful enemies, with no one around to trust. Or what about the mysterious stranger who has been following her? He is one of Death’s Servants, born and bred to kill at the country’s command. Not the most preferable ally, but then, her choices are limited. Soon she has to decide whether she can trust him or not—it’s a gamble she might not survive either way. And before Alex knows what is happening, her life is hanging by a silken thread…

By a Thread is a well-developed story with unique characters and detail-driven battle scenes. Alex’s true self is a spider, but she isn’t like anything you’d see in a Marvel comic. She’ll make you scream, bleed, and beg for mercy. She has a tender side as well. She’s a protector. As you read By a Thread, you’ll discover she’ll go to extremes to help those she cares about.

There were many other characters in this magical read. Each person had their own particular abilities. Darken intrigued me. He appeared to be a perfect match for Alex. They both have troubling pasts that shaped them into who they are today. Plus, they would give their lives for Max and Josy —  two kids on the run for their lives.

If I had to give out an award for Best Supporting Character, it would go out to Blayde. Mysterious, powerful, funny, charming… oh yeah, I need me some more of him. 🙂 We only got a glimpse of his power, and it was mesmerizing.

Special note: By a Thread ends with a cliffhanger. Story continues in book 2, Web of Lies.
