The trio from Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal (Jack, David, and Rosie) reminded me of Harry Potter, Ron, and Hermione. Three young adults band together to save their home, family, and friends from an evil, magical being. In both scenarios, there was a chosen one (teen) who had the power to defeat the villain. Of course, he can’t do it alone. He needed assistance. 


While there were many similarities between this book and the famous series by Rowling, Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal possessed its own unique features. For instance, Peter Wilson’s story had a punkey – a puppy + monkey, a mutant-looking creature. There were also portals that took you to different worlds in the universe. Could you imagine visiting a new planet every time you go on vacation?! That would be amazing!!! This feature would be a great discussion topic in a classroom. Where in the universe would you go? You could go even farther and have your students design their planet and include its features (animals, vegetation, food sources, etc.). 


Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal had many qualities that drew my attention and held my interest, besides those mentioned in the last paragraph. I loved the magical elements and the manor’s attic. There were so many artifacts to view in this room, each one with its own story to tell. It also had a bonus feature that you won’t see in a typical attic. (No spoilers; buy the book *smiley face*) 


What I would change?
I wish the Shadow Man’s identity weren’t so easy to figure out and so soon in the story too. 

Like I said in the opening paragraph, I do believe there are some shared traits between this story and the HP books. However, with that said, I did enjoy reading  Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portal and recommend others read it as well.

In addition to children’s and young adult content, Peter is also interested in writing for the adult market and is currently working on a crime thriller set in his home city, Sydney.

Author Alan Creed
Alan Creed fell in love with storytelling after seeing Star Wars for the first time as a child. When he was ten years old, his tutor asked him to write sentences containing three words: Ocean, Desert and Jungle. Instead of sentences, Alan wrote a 103-page story entitled Journey through the Desert. That’s when he knew he wanted to be a writer. His 103-page story served as the source material for the Dreadful Series. Alan is currently working on the next installment in the James Dreadful series.

The Christmas Cameo:  A Fiona Quinn Quick Mystery by C.S. McDonald (Book Review)

​A lovely cameo brooch is discovered in Fiona’s late Uncle Wilbur’s house two days before Christmas. The pin bears a romantic Christmas message from Wilbur for his new wife with the initials, D.A.S.

How very strange! To the family’s knowledge, Uncle Wilbur had never been married. So, who is this mysterious woman? Now, Fiona is on a holiday mission to locate D.A.S. and deliver the belated gift. 

Question is, what happened to the marriage? Is D.A.S. still alive after all these years? And if so, can Fiona find her before Christmas?

Fiona is not the only person in town who loves a good mystery. Ted Welton, his wife, and Detective Tavia are also eager to solve who’s the mysterious person behind the initials of D.A.S. on a cameo brooch discovered in Fiona’s dead uncle’s house.
 
The investigation leads to a sweet moment between Fiona and D.A.S. They are tears of joy for a man, long gone but never forgotten.


While Fiona is on the hunt for D.A.S., Nathan is on his quest as well. He’s looking for a pickpocket whose slick fingers nabbed the cameo. This perp does not wear all black when he’s looking to unburden a person of their belongings. Nope, he wears a Santa suit.


Since it’s the time of the year for peace on Earth, I don’t think I’m overstepping by saying everyone will receive a Christmas miracle. Yes, even fake Santa. I would encourage fake Santa to get a real job. He doesn’t seem to have any luck with pickpocketing.

Crystal Clear Confusion:  A Fiona Quinn Quick Mystery by C.S. McDonald literally had a nightmarish start. Poor Fiona was getting chased through the halls of Westwood Elementary School by a ferocious lion. All I can say is, thank goodness, it was only a terrible dream. 


Astrid, the wannabe clairvoyant, wanted to help Fiona interpret her dream — it was her first step in her new career path. Through their session, I learned the names of two phobias: cynophobia – fear of dogs, and ophidiophobia – fear of snakes. It’s always awesome to learn new facts, no matter what your age is. 


While the story didn’t hold my interest as much as C.S. McDonald’s other works, it did have its comedic moments. Like the rest in the series, it’s a family-friendly read. 


Whether you’re an educator or not, this story creates an opportunity to explore dream interpretation and examine phobias. I bet everyone will learn a new fact or two. 🙂

Yikes!

Can Fiona crack the case? Hopefully, but what’s an amateur sleuth supposed to do when her Maltese, Harriet, shows up decked out in the stolen goods?

Okay, robbery is not a laughable crime; however, C.S. McDonald brought cuteness to a serious situation. She also brought a hearty amount of comedic moments thanks to the Sea Wash Retirement Village residents.

For example: Imagine your granny, dressed all in black, grease on her face, hiding out to catch a thief in the wee hours of the morning. Now, imagine multiple grannies doing the same. That’s what happened.

Don’t worry, the brave women of Sea Wash Retirement Village will not be serving time.

As for who stole the puppies, well, it’ll be difficult to be mad at the person. CUTENESS overload!

As for who burglarized the village, the culprit is not cute. Greed was all the motive they needed.

On a side note, C.S. McDonald had me craving a lemon meringue pie, something fierce. Next time I go to the store, I’ll be buying one. Unless I can convince my mom to make one as Nancy did for Fiona.
